At Which Point I Must Pay The Cream Cheese Piper

So I went a little cuckoo with the cream cheese over the holidays.

Which is no big surprise because I’ve gone a little cuckoo with food in general for the last, oh, two and a half years. I mean, what’s a few blocks of cream cheese in the grand scheme of homemade macaroni and cheese, homemade chocolate pudding, homemade chicken spaghetti, and homemade everything else that I’ve been whipping up in the kitchen (with real butter, real mayonnaise and real sour cream, thankyouverymuch) day after day after day.

But as the mama of a very active three year-old, it’s become increasingly clear to me – especially over the last two or three months – that I have to be in better shape if I’m going to keep up with the little whippersnapper. As a result, ever since we bought this house I’ve been walking (not just up and down the grocery aisles – for exercise, silly) about five times a week. Alex and the dogs go with me, so it’s not necessarily a relaxing time, but it gets us outside. And it gets us moving.

Truth be told, Alex runs almost the whole time that I’m walking. And while saying that makes me feel like I’m one of those high-pressure mamas who’s already pushing her child to EXCEL, DADGUMMIT, the fact of the matter is that he loves it. He loves being outside, being with the dogs, being with me, and being able to run up and down all the grassy hills while I stay on the walking path. It’s been good. More than that, it’s been necessary.

I’ve actually thought about going to get one of those little pedometer thingys to measure my distance (we walk on a golf course so I can’t exactly drive the route to check our mileage) because I really do like pushing myself to go a little farther or a little faster every week. Then I saw this post about Nancy’s walking challenge, and I knew I’d found just the thing to keep me moving. That’s my goal for this new year…not to lose 40 pounds, not to avoid sugar completely, not to drink eight glasses of fresh organic vegetable juice by nine o’clock every morning (hey. I’ve tried stranger weight-loss methods), but to keep moving. That’s it.

Nancy has set up a Mr. Linky where you can join her challenge. All the instructions are in her post – and it really couldn’t be any simpler. She’s set up a target distance – and every Friday we’ll check in and tell her how many miles we’ve walked that week. It’s so easy – but it’s also provides some accountability. I like that.

If you think you’re going to participate, leave me a comment and let me know. In the meantime, I’ll be heading to Walmart and picking up one of those pedometer thingys. And not going anywhere near the cream cheese while I’m there.

  1. I just may have to join in! I already walk on a regular basis — I would love to have a spot to post and say, “See! I actually AM doing SOMETHING!!” I’m also about to start a regular feature on my blog: Fitness Friday! Check it out — on Friday! :-)

I love that Alex loves to walk/ run/ be on the move! That’s a great start in life for him!

  2. Oh dear.

    I was afraid of this.

God’s been dealing with the non-exerciser in me for quite some time, and this may be just the way to get my hineybutt up off the computer chair and in motion.

    Not that I’ll like it.

    Because that just won’t happen.

    But I’ll make the commitment.

    Feeling rather Eeyore-ish…

  3. I’ve signed up and will take my first walk yet tonight! WooHoo! I’m so excited… :)

  4. Sign me up–I will be doing yoga too. . .and I am not the kind of gal who looks like she does yoga–but boy, oh boy do I LOVE it. . .

  5. I signed up after Nancy emailed me. This helps me stay accountable. Otherwise, I would slack off. I hate anything aerobic. In fact, I am anaerobic. But walking, I can do that.

  6. I signed up. Lord help me.

  7. Well I’ll have to take a rain check…this ole’ body of mine is giving me run for my money again and the doctors. I update ya later but keep er’ going…I’ll get my pom pom’s on and keep y’all going!

  8. I’m signing up. The kids will be walking with me. Please pray real hard that this doesn’t kill me, because I’m afraid it just might.

  9. That sounds like a great idea. I too am wishing I’d avoided the cream cheese a bit–but it tasted so good!

  10. I’m in! But I think I’ll have to include a little running….not a lot though.

  11. you will see such a difference, I always managed to keep my weight in check when i could walk alot. Umm haven’t been walking so much the last few years…best of luck on your fitness quest.

  12. I totally understand, I need to get moving too. I would love to be able to join a Curves again though, because I did good when I went there. And this is the lamest excuse ever, but I fell down and went boom, scraped both my knees horribly, and as I couldn’t bend them comfortably for a few weeks, my Curves straightened out and that was that.

    So good luck!!

  13. I think I better jump on board, but you must fork over the chicken spaghetti recipe.

  14. Yeah I am kinda wanting the chicken spaghetti recipe also:-)

  15. Yes, I think I am anaerobic, too!!! I could NEVER be anorexic, so now I have a category I actually fit into….well, that’s about all that fits, so I am Eyeore-ishly going to go over to Nancy’s and check it out. I used to walk everyday, too, and then started sitting at the computer way too much. Going to Nancy’s to check it out, and I’m guessing I’m probably in (said with an Eyeore kind of pesi-Optimism….;-)

  16. I danced with my kids on New Years eve and ooooh am I out of shape! im still feeling it….sigh
I need to excersize! and mae it a daily thing instead of once a yr:)

  17. I’m in! Just started walking at the beginning of December so this will help keep me going in the new year! I too have been cooking with REAL products (butter, whole milk..) – hey it’s more natural!
Let’s get movin’ and keep movin’ bloggers!

  18. I’m in. Maybe I’ll lose those holiday pounds quickly?!

  19. OK….I can do the walking if it means I don’t have to cut out my butter or whole milk.

    mmm chicken spaghetti!!

  20. I started to comment here and over at Shannon’s, but I decided it would waste more time and energy if I made my own post. Ha! But I’m right there with you. I need to get off my hiney and move more, too.

  21. I think I am lucky I HATE cream cheese!

  22. I signed up…now I am going to get a pedometer, too. I have always wanted one!

  23. I bow to your BooMama popularity. I’ve had over 250 visits to my post that you plugged. Thanks so much!

  24. sounds like you have a great new place to walk. a dog and a boy are great motivation.

  25. Hmmmmmmmm…..I wonder if I could strap Parker into his Ergo carrier grab the portable 02 bottle and get some exercise. I REALLY could use to get out and breath some fresh air. I’m getting major computer chair butt.

  26. As long as all I have to do is wear the pedometer, and report every Friday I can do that. I got confused going to Google but I tend to over-complicate most things (OCD…). Great idea, and fun to do this together!

  27. Hey Boo’
I started seeing a Nutricionist 4 weeks ago and have lost 21 pounds thus far. I may take the challenge though I am a terrible walker, but this sounds encouraging. great job keep it up.

  28. Yes, please post the chicken spaghetti recipe as I have never eaten it before!

  29. OK! What good timing…hubby has been asking me repeatedly to join him in walking…hope that isn’t a bad sign! :-/ Anyway :-) I’m in! I went over and signed up at Nancy’s. I’m nervous…I don’t like to make such rash decisions but I guess it’s time.
