AI – Top 10 Women

Everybody ready for round two?

Here we go.

Gina Gocksen – “Alone” – Did anyone else appreciate that her red highlights matched her dress? I so appreciate that. I should probably mention that this song is one of my least favorite songs ever, but it was good for her. A little pitchy at the end, I thought (which is the opposite of what Randy said, but that’s a’ight). I like her confidence. And I realllllly like her hair.

Alaina Alexander – “Not Ready To Make Nice” – I’m not sure it’s wise to try to follow in Natalie Maines’ footsteps – especially given the fact that Natalie sang this song so memorably at the Grammy Awards a couple of weeks ago. However, Alaina looked great, and this week’s performance was better than last.

LaKisha Jones – “Midnight Train To Georgia” – One of my favorite songs ever. And I’m sorry, y’all – if you pulled out a phone book, Miss LaKisha could SANG IT. Not sing it. SANG IT. She is so relaxed, so talented – she can’t HELP but sing. Love her.

Melinda Doolittle – “My Funny Valentine” – Good grief, y’all. That was beautiful. Romantic. Original. Stunning. She is utterly humble and lovable. Tickled to death to see her doing so well.

Antonella Barba – “Because You Loved Me” – Much better than last week. Adorable dress.

Jordin Sparks – “Reflection” – If you looked up “cute as a button” in the dictionary, you’d see Jordin’s picture. She’s remarkably composed for her age…and when she really had to belt it on this song, she did a great job. I just think it’s tough to sing anything that someone like Christina Aguilera has recorded. Those are mighty big shoes to fill…but Jordin is so likeable that you can’t help but root for her. I really like her.

Stephanie Edwards – “Dangerously In Love” – I have to say: she did a really good job with a Beyonce’ song that can’t be easy to sing because it’s so arrythmic. She always looks so feminine and pretty – and I think she’ll be around for awhile.

Leslie Hunt – “It’s A New Day” – She is so interesting to me. Love her voice. The scat part threw me off a little bit. I just get the feeling that she would be more comfortable singing in a coffee house while strumming a guitar. Big points for the cute skirt. Not that it’s a cute skirt competition, of course, but every little bit helps.

Haley Scarnato – “Queen of the Night” – (Soundtrack from The Bodyguard, anyone? Hands up if you owned it. You know you did. You know you loved Rachel Marron.) I think Haley was trying to break out after last week’s pageant performance, and it’s admirable that she really tried to shift gears. It was way better than last week – but if you put her performance up against, say, Melinda Doolittle’s, there’s just no comparison. Not this week, at least.

Sabrina Sloan – “All The Man I Need” – Another Whitney song. Honestly, I didn’t think she was as good this week – mainly because the big parts of this song were a little rough. Her voice is strong – and hopefully her personality will come through more in the weeks to come. She doesn’t have the same transparency that Melinda, LaKisha and Jordin do – and I don’t know if that’s something that you can practice…seems like you either have it or you don’t.

Who should go? – Same for me as last week: Antonella and Alaina
Best of the night? – Melinda, with LaKisha a close second

I have no idea if anyone wants to link to their own AI posts, but I’ll leave the Mr. Linky up for a few hours just in case. Can’t wait to see what y’all think in the comments.

  1. I agree with just about everything you said. Haley was definitely not Miss Mississippi tonight. Just the opposite, in fact. Melinda was my hands down favorite. Far and away the best of the bunch.

  2. I agree with everything you said! I added my post!

  3. I’m so mad I don’t have TiVo, don’t know how to work my VCR, and work on Wednesdays! Though I will say this… I just gave a thought-provoking speech the other day about how The Bodyguard was Whitney Houston’s high point, both musically and dramatically. It was welcomed with a blank stare. I saw that movie more times than I care to admit, but I’m glad there’s someone out there who even remembers it.

  4. Girl, I have not watched it yet—this is my guilty Tivo plan for tomorrow afternoon! I think Lakisha is amazing. Simon said it last week, “This lot should just pack up and go home!” It may just come down to Lakisha and Sundance. Cool by me!

  5. I agree with you on all your comments. I think Alaina and Antonella will be out tomorrow night. Then again, they are both beautiful girls, so who knows. The American people voted off Jennifer Hudson early, too.

  6. Melinda was awesome! My favorite!
I can’t figure out why Antonella and Sanjaya seem to be getting so many votes…I think they should definitely go but don’t think they will.

  7. You poor thing. You’re trying to take a break, for Pete’s sake.

Simple, really. It’s either Melinda Doolittle or Chris Sligh. My prediction. But, for the record, last season, the moment he performed for the first time, I told Rob, Taylor Hicks is going to win this thing.

This time? Chris Sligh. Hands down.

  8. So glad to see your AI post. Love Lakisha and Melinda-both are so humble. Still waiting to hear about your hair!

  9. I’ll tell you what I think, I think that my husband sabotaged my AI viewing and somehow Benelli’s Dream Hunts got recorded instead of AI. By the time I realize this travesty had occurred, I had missed Melinda and LaKisha.

    But really…I’m over it.

  10. Rocks in my Dryer says:

Yay for Melinda! I LOVE her.

  11. I think (hope) Alaina and Antonella will be the two to go. It’s fixin’ to get hard to decide.

  12. What I wanna know is if any of you vote? How much do they charge for those calls? I voted twice last season towards the end to keep Taylor and Chris in. I just couldn’t help myself.
    Susan

  13. I think you are right on, BooMama! My favorites are the same as last week…LaKisha, Melinda, Jordin, & Sabrina. But, I really thought Sabrina did worse this week and I just can’t help but love Jordin! I thought Stephanie did a great job, too!

  14. Left my link- I think the girls are the best this year!

  15. I thought that Simon’s comment to Melinda (regarding her humility) was dead on! She simply has a glow about her. I can REALLY see Christ in her demeanor. LOVE that! She sang one of my allll time favorite songs. Now THAT’S how ya do Chaka justice!!

Poor Antonella. Wonder if she doesn’t realize that she’s out of her league? Gorgeous girl (and I’m sure that Maxim and Stuff will be SUPER PLEASED to have her on their covers someday) but she’s not the next American Idol. I think it’s her week to go home.

  16. Susan – I’m shamelessly addicted to AI, and I’ve watched every season, except the first, religiously. But I have never once voted! I know. Lame.

I put my link in. It seems like everyone has the same favorites this year.

  17. suzanne says:

I totally agree with your comments…I think there are five REALLY good girls, and five ranging from very good, to “she’ll be the next to say adios”…..and if you follow all your comments, you’ll know who they are. I agree with ya’ll on Melinda and LaKisha….FANTASTIC singers and love their sweet spirits!

  18. Thanks for the update! I missed AI last night. My only consilation was knowing that you would have my back. :-) It would not hurt my feelings if Antonella were to be voted off as I am not a fan of hers. Glad to hear that LaKisha and Melinda did well. These girls can sing! Jordin is not far behind them. And she is so precious.

  19. I left my link as well! LOVING having a place to talk about this – I think Alaina and Antonella should and will go home tonight. If they don’t, you’ll hear a primal scream coming from the heartland! ;)

  20. You know I’m not tv watcher, but we had terrible weather and we had to watch tv to see if we were going the way of Dorothy to Oz, so we turned it to AI. I didn’t get to hear all of it because of the “Video Disturbances”, but I have to say that I loved Melinda! She was so different from the others. She chose a jazzy classic that matched her voice. My only negative comment is that I would have loved to see her dress the part of that song. JEANS and a JACKET?! Not in any jazz bar I’ve seen…

LaKisha was also marvelous. That girl can sing! But again, the look didn’t fit the presentation. I just don’t think she can pull off a short jean skirt like that.

And my other favorite? Leslie Hunt’s choice fit her range and intonation to a T. That girl’s sultry alto oozed comfortably smooth jazz that was ever-so-pleasing to hear. And that skat part was perfect because let me tell you from a singer’s POV, that’s hard to do! Forget what Simon said. That girl rocked.

My daughter was gah-gah over Jordin. I couldn’t tell if it was the singing or the song. And it was a performance I missed because we were tucking our son in at that time…

And poor Antonella made my ears bleed. That song was so not in her league. Poor girl. She tried, and failed miserably. She may be cute, but she can’t handle the big stuff.

  21. I hope you enjoyed your little break and got rested up. Isn’t it amazing how we have to “recover” from a little vacation or weekend? Good to see you back on the blog.

I missed the show last night. Don’t have the modern ways to tape, just the old VCR and we taped Friday Night Lights instead. My husband and I both like that show and he’s not so thrilled with AI, so I told him I would take turns taping. (We’re not home until late on Wednesdays.) Anyhoo, I was hopeful that I could come here and get an update and was pleased to see the post. I watched the guys and felt they did a much better job overall. The only disappointing one was Sanjaya…again. Sweet kid, just don’t know if he’s got what it takes to hang in there. Where the girls are concerned….I’ll be disappointed tonight if anyone goes home other than Antonella and Alaina.

    Have a great day!

  22. You are cracking me up Boo! I have been watching it but haven’t picked any favorites just yet. I always wait until the competition gets a little smaller for some reason : )

  23. http://www.dialidol.com/asp/predictions/Predictions.asp

Check out dialidol.com’s predictions…computer program based on busy signals. They are very interesting.

  24. Alright! Let’s get down to business honey. I agree with everything said. Although I think Hailey is in jeapordy tonight, she didn’t fit that song to me at all. She seemed like a sweet housewife that had too many drinks and channeled Whitney Houston one night. Not very good in my opinion, which obviously really matters.

I think Alaina will go and Hailey will go. For the Boys, I think AJ and Sanjaya will go. Sanjaya completely wierded me out with the Michael Jackson impersonations.

Man! Some great singers this year though! I love this show!

    Jamie

  25. I agree with you… Melinda’s #1. Alaina & Antonella should go home. I was a little disappointed in the wardrobe all around, except I thought Lakisha looked fabulous (and I think Ryan is developing a little crush on her).

Someone please tell me, though… have you ever seen anyone more photogenic than Haley Scarnato???!!!

  26. Oh yeah, & I want to be Gina Glockson when I grow up. She’s so cool!

  27. My husband was studying, so I recorded it and still haven’t watched, but I did visit the AI webpage and read through some of the questionaires they have the contestants answer. Melinda is all about Jesus which earns her even more points in my book!!!

  28. I’m craving Antonella’s dress, which was the only reason for anyone to vote for her.

  29. Okay, got my post up about it too. This is fun. :)

  30. I seem to be in the minority regarding Leslie LOL I put my post up :) xoxo melzie

  31. Since I just happened to chat about AI on my blog today, I went ahead and linked. How fun!

  32. Gah! Leslie booted before Antonella?! Just goes to show you that talent doesn’t count in this rigged event. Bah! What is wrong with America? Did you not hear Antonella attempting to sing only to miss most every note? Gah!
