An Exciting Opportunity In Pseudo-Journalism

September 10, 2007

So I found out this afternoon that I’m going to get to do a little Q&A with Monk & Neagle. Their new CD (yes, the one I have been talking about for two months now) comes out next week, and I am tickled to death to be able to do something fun for the release date.

And there’s no doubt that I will ask them a wide range of serious questions, including but not limited to: what kind of cereal do they like, do they have a favorite TV show from their childhoods, and when they think of a blogger named BooMama, is the first phrase that pops in their minds “restraining order”?

But then I started thinking.

(SHOCKING, ISN’T IT?)

Big Mama and I have loved your podcast questions so much, and quite frankly y’all are way better question askers than I am. Plus, I know that many of you have enjoyed M & N’s music as much as I have. So if you have a question that you’d like to ask the Monk & Neagle boys (or “Nickel Neagle,” as Alex calls them), would you leave it in my comments? Be sure to leave your blog URL (if you have one) so that if I use your question I can link to you in the interview next Tuesday.

Thanks, y’all!

p.s. For those of you who have emailed and commented to ask about the Deeper Still conference, I’m going to type up my notes and thoughts about it tonight or tomorrow. So much to say - and all of it good.

No question. Just a comment. I first heard their song “Dancing with the Angels” when I was putting a video montage together for my dad’s memorial.

Tell them, please, how much that song touched the hearts of my two babies in that moment. It put the whole “death to eternal life” thing in perspective for them more than anything we told them.

That, to me, is a priceless gift.

Um, you’re like the most famous person that I pretend that I actually know. I’m excited for you to talk to them! How are you going to contain yourself? I would be giggling and saying, “like” every second word. And that is why you are boomama and I am not. Luckyyyyyyy!

I can’t think of one intelligent question I would want to ask them. I know you’ll cover all the pertinent info that we all want revealed. I really like the cereal question. Who doesn’t love cereal?

Boomama - Ask M&N what song (by any artist other than themselves) would absolutely be on their personal “Life soundtrack”. Can’t wait to read the interview!!

Where do they strike the balance between artistic freedom and Christian faith? Are there areas of music or lyrics they want to explore but feel limited by the Christian label?

Or how do they handle the pressure to cultivate an image that sells? Does this ever interfere with who they are or “real life?”

What a fun swishy thing that Heather did…don’t you agree?

My question: At first I thought it was like the TV show Monk, expanding with a new character named Neagle. These are your last names, I know, but what other names did you consider?

To each of you (y’all in Boomama speak), which song on your latest CD is your favorite and why?

How exciting! We literally never listen to the radio anymore, in fact I think I have played the cd soooo much I have damaged it! I have to get a new one when it comes out.

When did you accept Christ as your Savior? Is there any one person that helped lead you to Salvation?

What were they like as children - you know, to help identify any child prodigies out there.

  14. My Twenty Cents Keeps Moving says:

Hmm what would I ask Monk and Neagle (or Trent and Michael as I like to call my pretend BFF’s)?

I would definitely ask them for the guitar chords for the bridge of Hallelujah Jesus, since I know the other part but not the bridge.

Then, so as not to seem completely self-serving, I would maybe ask something deeply theological like, “Does God have a big toe?” or something like that– I get these kinds of questions from my kids all the time.

Are they married? I love seeing the wives so see if you can score us a picture! Being a ministry widow wife myself, I always love to know the women behind their men so I can say an extra prayer for them.

    Question for M&N:

Do you have teens listening to your music and, if so, have you had the opportunity to witness the positive effects your music may have on them? Please share the details!

I think we’re all dying to know just how much they love Chris Tomlin and how much of an influence he had on their work. :)

Seriously though, I’d love it if they each shared with us a sampling of tunes from their iPods.

BTW - thanks for sorta kinda answering my question on the podcast! Keep pluggin’ away at the vast media empire!

I know I’m way late on this (I’m ashamed to say I’ve fallen behind on my daily Boomama fix), but I have an unusual question for the guys.

The only band (duo) I’ve ever heard that’s similar in style to M&N is a couple of guys named Nate and James. They’re quite obscure (put out one indie CD, I think), but I’d love to know if M&N have heard of them since they’re so similar — both are acoustic-based music with gorgeous two-part harmonies throughout.

Barring that, what do these guys currently have on their iPods and/or count among their influences (either early or recently)? And why aren’t they coming to Austin to see their friend Aaron, who Trent even has in his “Thank Yous” for the CD? :-(
