This Is Not My Finest Bloggy Hour

in Rambling

So we have the small matter of a five year-old’s birthday party tomorrow.

And I still have to put together the favor bags and go buy drinks and ice cream, not to mention that I need to CLEAN MY FILTHY HOUSE.

However, I have managed to procure all manner of Pirates of the Caribbean-related party wares. And you’d better believe that every single child at the party will be sporting a Fundana.TM OH YES MA’AM. Because we like to keep it festive around here.

Anyway, this has just been one of those weeks where the blog has gotten my (admittedly lukewarm-ish) leftovers. I do apologize. But it’s also been the first week since I came home from Africa that I’ve felt like our little family has been firing on all cylinders, and that has been a huge – HUGE – blessing. It’s been a good week.

Also: today, on the way home from school, Alex told me that Pontius Pirate made Jesus die on the cross and THAT, THAT IS WHY, MAMA, THAT PIRATES ARE THE BAD GUYS, BECAUSE THE PIRATES HURT JESUS.

It’s an interesting theological perspective for sure – it’s just a shame that it’s not, you know, accurate. So somehow between now and tomorrow I need to convince my child that Jack Sparrow is neither directly nor indirectly responsible for what happened to Jesus. Or else we’re going to have untold emotional and psychological trauma at the birthday party.

Good times.

See y’all in a little while.

Kids make EVERYTHING different, don’t they?

Well congratulations on getting back to (somewhat) normal! :)

I don’t think you should correct this one. It will add an element to the party that will take it to a whole new level, not to mention make this Easter especially meaningful, and give you good blackmail material for when he’s a teenager.
Happy Birthday to your son! Good luck surviving the party.

Don’t you love how kids keep things interesting! :)

Okay, maybe it’s too early in the year for this tip where you are, but I always laid the party decorations on really thick, then IMMEDIATELY after the cake and ice cream kicked in, took all the kiddos outside for a water gun fight.

This usually resulted in no one looking at MY filthy house…and had the added benefit of cleaning most of the ice cream and cake off the kids.

Of course, my kids birthdays are July and August, but I thought I’d throw out my “helpful” solution. ;)

I love the pirate party…we’ve hosted three, all for about the 5th or 6th birthday of each of our boys. We lived it up too with bandanas, pirate hooks, silver earrings and eye patches. All manner of pirate games with “walk the plank” and cannonball wars being the hits….don’t forget the big treasure chest hunt all over the yard while they followed the treasure map!! Great fun….those were the days. Enjoy… they pass so quickly.

I used to work in children’s programming… we had lots of exciting re-interpretations of classic stories!

I do like the Pirate interpretation.

I love that! Alex sounds like he is a hoot. Pirate huh? Have a GREAT party. Happy Birthday Alex–5 years old–that’s a very important birthday!!

Well, because everyone knows, a Fundana is one of the new spring must-haves!

I heard a similar story on our local Christian radio station yesterday. A little girl drew a picture of the cross and a large airplane….when asked for an explantion she said it was for the “pilot” who killed Jesus to get away….oh how precious are our children….Pam, South Bend

My boys were in the bath together one day and were shouting out…”Mom! Jesus DIVED for our sins!!!” (and then they would make a big splash)

Had to have a little “Jesus was not Greg Louganis” speech.

Oh that is just too cute!! At Disneyland earlier this week I was informed by my nearly 4 year old daughter that Jack “Spawow” was her very favorite ride! Her birthday is next Friday, so I have to somehow come up with a family birthday celebration that also pays appropriate attention to the death on the cross of Jesus Christ. So does that mean Chuck E Cheese’s before or after church that night? Maybe I’ll try Alex’s pirate interpretation!
At least this is the only year I have to deal with the confluence of her birthday and Christ’s death on the same day… she’ll be 48 or something before it happens again!
Have fun at your party! In my experience, the kids are usually so wild and the house so insane after it ‘s all over no one cares how clean it was when you started. But I know how you feel!

Boomama.

I love to plan parties.

Why, oh, why am I not there to buy the drinks and ice cream?

(You can do the cleaning.)

I LOVE these funnies that kids come up with. That Pontius Pirate remark ranks right up there with “while shepherds washed their socks by night,” or “gladly the cross-eyed bear.”

My sister in law is a pre-school director. She really NEEDS to have her own blog to write about all the cute things the kids at school say – and maybe even the not-so-cute things some of the parents say. But she would never do that – write about the parents, I mean.

LOL!! Had me in stitches.

Glad to hear that “normalcy” is returning – though I’m not undermining all the “Africa-ness” afterward, I find it hard to believe that “normal” could stay away for very long with a wonderful son like Alex to keep things interesting!! :)

For the record, I’d let Amy Beth do the shopping and I’d do the cleaning and decorating because THAT is my FAVORITE PART! ;)

Oh, please please post pics. We’re hosting a pirate GIRL 5th birthday party next month, except we’re doing VeggieTales pirates instead of Carribbean pirates. :-)

Oh, boy can I relate! We are having a small sleepover on Saturday for my son’s 6th birthday and I am just sitting down at the computer after four straight hours of cleaning with more to come tomorrow. Plus a trip to the grocery store and we register for kindergarten tomorrow after work/daycare.

I have had to let go of the theme party, or maybe I should say embrace it, because we have three themes this year – Dora favors, a Superman Birthday Hero rosette button, and a Backyardigans Pablo balloon.

Good luck with everything!

Love it. I remember when my little girl came out of Sunday School and told me that Peter Pan could walk on water. :)

My BEST bday party I ever put on was a pirate party. I was an AWESOME mom that day. Hope you can be as cool as me.

And that is why we don’t have the Easter equivalent of Nativity Scenes. We can’t risk Jack Sparrow showing up where he doesn’t belong.

(Also, ever since my I took a particular workout class a few years ago, I’ve been under the impression that pilates may have killed Jesus.)

happy party-ing. I just survived four birthdays (admittedly two of them were on the same day for my twins) in a month and I’m ready for a break. I am all caked out. And that’s saying something.

Pontius Pirate!!! That is about the cutest thing I have EVER heard!!!!!!! Makes perfect sense– Pilate.. Pirate.. Kinda like “of course for adventure your mind’s on a new rooooooooomance.. and love..”

Those pirates get blamed for everything. Next thing you know, it’s global warming.

Pontius Pirate??? I love it!!! I’m going to be chuckling this Sunday at church when they read the gospel and refer to the other well-known Pontius….

And why in the world would you clean your house before a birthday party? You do realize that as soon as one other 5 year old sets foot in your house it will automatically undo all the cleaning you just did?? You know that. Right?

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT waste any time cleaning your house!

i wish my level of creativity was near that of your “leftovers!” :)

I just read your post about him turning five. My own, Miss L, is turning five next month. I want to cry and return to bed whenever I think about it.

Five years old and kindergarten starting is too much for me too handle. I want her to stay my (toddler) baby forever!

What a cute post! Making those memories…enjoy every minute!

P.S. I have heard “don’t clean your house before the party, wait until after, because they are just going to mess it up” too, but I can’t do it. I just have to do it twice cuz it would drive me crazy!! :)

Don’t have time to read all the comments but a quick suggestion for party favors. If you can find chocolate candies wrapped in gold wrappers like coins, each “pirate” could go home with a little bag of gold :-)

You’re a much better momma than me. I have the birthday stuff sitting in a bag just waiting for the party that should have been – last November. But hey, the rule is that if they don’t have a party, they can’t grow older, right? I can have that boy eating off the kids menu until he’s 16! I’d go further with it, but I know he’ll want to drive by then.

Pam in South Bend and I listen to the same radio programs – about the Pontius Pilot. I do hope you approach this subject delicately – and maybe bring in the spelling thing? ’cause it is just sad for Howard to think the pirates killed Jesus -takes all the fun and yo ho ho out of the party don’t you think? You are a good mama – and cleaning the house for the b’day party of a 5 year old – that seems like a self defeating concept but what do I know.

That reminds me of the time my husband’s nephew was little and drew a picture of the Easter Bunny hanging on a cross. It WAS Easter, you know, and there ARE a lot of symbols around at that time of year, and he WAS little, but it does make you wonder if maybe we’ve sort of overdone the whole Peter Cottontail aspect of things, doesn’t it?

Just a time saving thought for you regarding your birthday party….scoop ice cream before the party into a lined (Pirate cupcake liners?) cup cake pan and then freeze…it makes for a very easy way to serve it later on with the cake!! Have fun! LOVE your new look!
