Did you see what I just did? I pretended that you asked me how I was doing, and then I said I was sick, and you were all, YOU’RE SICK? And I was all, Yes. With the flu.
I’m not really sick, by the way. But I learned that little bit of dialogue in 9th grade in Senorita Calderon’s class. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER, internets.
And I hope you weren’t distracted by the fact that I didn’t use any accent marks or upside down question marks. My only excuse is that I have not yet mastered international typing.
But now that I think about it, I may have just saved your life. Because if you ever find yourself lost in a Spanish-speaking country and unable to communicate with that country’s citizens, you can, at the very least, tell everyone you meet that you have EL GRIPE, and I bet eventually someone will help you get to a hospital, where you may be able to find some sort of computer. And then you can use the Google to get directions.
I’m telling you: Google can fix everything.
Anyway. I digress.
My sweet friend Big Mama is having a bloggy party this Friday, and I just wanted to help spread the word.
Except that I think every single person who reads my blog also reads her blog, so I’m really probably not spreading much of anything aside from some really elementary Spanish.
But still. I like for the internet to be aware when there’s a fiesta on the horizon.
Or, I should say: UNA FIESTA EN EL HORIZONTE.
It’s gonna be fun.

“Los traen cosas, muchas cosas.” Which I think means, “They bring him things, many things.”
Why? Why do they bring him things? And what are those things? Ah, the merciless ravages of time on a person’s memory . . .
Oh, and I do remember “Tengo hambre!” which means, “I’m hungry!”
Because it’s important to eat in every language :)

You never know when stuff like that will come in handy. Like when you’re in China and have to tell the Chinese pharmacist that you need something for constipation. Then once they get over their fit of hysterical laughter, you have to further convey the idea that it’s for a 1-year-old. Mr. at Home would’ve paid bucks to know how to say that in Mandarin.

I’m at my brother’s and I’m using his computer as the dorkhead doesn’t have wireless so I can’t link this, but do a search and find yourself the “One Semester of Spanish Love Song.” It is wonderful. You will love it and, best of all, you will understand every word, which will make you feel very smart and bi-lingual indeed! (If you can’t find it, e me–I’ll be home soon)

Although I can’t remember how to conjugate a Spanish verb, I do remember most of my first dialog from Spanish I in the 9th grade. (And while it was slightly different from the dialog you cited, it did contain the lines: “Y tu hermana? Como estas?” “Esta enferma. Con la gripe.” ) So I guess the flu must be a common malady in Spanish speaking countries!
I also remember the first few lines of The Canterbury Tales IN MIDDLE ENGLISH! Because I am a fount of totally useless information!
