Look, Kids, Your Daddy Left That Facehole

May 1, 2008

Open hostility between Michael and Stanley aside, this was more of a typical “Office” episode than we’ve had in the last couple of weeks.

But I’m telling you: when we see Michael genuinely vulnerable - like he was in the last conversation with Stanley - I get the urge to crawl under a very small piece of furniture and stay there until the funny returns.

Also? Michael’s comedy routine towards the end of the episode? EXCRUCIATINGLY AWKWARD, OH MY WORD. I was begging the camera to just please cut away and MAKE IT END, I BEG YOU.

Lots of memorable lines tonight, though - definitely a classic Office blend of humor and tension.

Here are my favorites.

1. Andy and Angela’s madlib: “The tall man entered the nice building to visit a very nice man. ‘Sit down, Mr. Smith, could I interest you in any good cat food?’”

2. “Oh, Pam, those make you look so ugly. I can’t even hear you. It’s just noise coming out of an ugly scientist.”

3. “We need to get perkling a little bit.”

4. “DID I STUTTER?”

5. “I’ll use it as I would a wagon on my farm. It will be pulled by a donkey.”

6. “You’re fired like a heart attack.”

Yours?

p.s. I don’t like it when Jim is sad, thank you.

I didn’t like tonight’s episode at all. I did like my favorite line “That’s what she said” muttered into the cement!

…and of course, the fake proposal AGAIN!

  2. Tater and Tot says:

Michael: What are we talking about here, Crips, Bloods?

Both. Yeah, them, and the Latin Kings, the Warriors, Newsies.
    ——————————————
In the gang world, we use something called fluffy fingers.

    What is that?

That’s when somebody really gets in your face, you just start tickling them. Then he starts tickling you. Pretty soon you laughing and hugging. Before you know it, you’ve forgotten the whole thing. You all can just go to church together and get an ice cream cone.

I would have never thought that gangs would be tickling each other.

    It’s effective.

I thought for sure we’d se Michael giving Stanley the “fluffy fingers.”

You can hear Darryl’s voice almost crack into laughter when he says that about church and the ice cream cone.

    HILARIOUS!!

  3. Barbara H. says:

When Stanley was carrying on against Michael and Ryan was getting after Jim, I thought, man, this is a little too real! I really thought they had gone uncomfortably too far with Stanley, but his last line brought it back around.

I thought in your #3 quote he said “percolating.” I use that word, too, but wonder how many people these days really get the word picture who haven’t seen a coffeepot on a gas stove percolating through the little glass knob on top. :-)

When did Dwight start trying to brainwash people?

I loved the fake proposal, too. That and the face in the concrete and the remarks about Pam’s glasses were the funniest parts to me.

Ok, I’ve gotta start watching this show! I’m laughing at your post and have NO idea what in the heck you’re talking about. Perhaps some sleep would be beneficial for me at this juncture! :-)

  5. chrissy says:

Ooooh, that Ryan is so smarmy.

I loved Phyllis trying to think of a story about writing in cement.

Also the saran wrap hat with the straw taped to it when he put his face in cement.

And Darryl, saying he was in the Newsies. So FUNNY.

  6. Shelley says:

Mixed emotions about tonight’s episode. I liked the funnies, but the seriousness made me a little uneasy.

Kevin: Hey Pam, I really like your glasses.

    Pam: Oh, thanks.

Kevin: All the girlfriends I’ve ever had have worn glasses.

    Pam: OK

Kevin: It’s kind of a turn on for me actually…

Pam: I should really get back to work.

Kevin: …like librarians. Could you just say, “These are due back Thursday?”

    Pam: No

Kevin walks away so defeated, and Pam can’t function for the rest of the day without her glasses!

  7. Marla Saunders says:

I was so happy to see Toby didn’t move to Costa Rica yet! But a little disconcerted by the reprimand to Jim. Am I the only one who sometimes sees a sad foreshadowing with Jim once in awhile? Like when Phyllis called him Michael?

Otherwise I enjoyed tonight more than last week. Still waiting for it to hit its stride after the break, though.

  8. Holly Smith says:

I liked Jim’s comment after Andy’s with the “newer” and “more” zing. Andy’s cutting look was hilarious!

Also the gang members tickling each other and then going to church and afterwards having ice cream was funny to me.

This Office was not my fave. Like you, I don’t like to see Jim sad…and what is up with Ryan? and Dwight drove me bonkers with his pushiness.

  9. Vicky says:

I don’t like it when Jim is sad either. I officially do NOT like Ryan now (last week I felt sorry for him… but no more). And the “comedy” at the end… waaaay to long– oh the misery, make it stop!!!!! But the Daddy’s Face Hole… awesome! And Dwight “flipping” Andy’s car… oh my!
Overall, not my favorite… but there were moments.

  10. jacquelynne says:

I think Dwight’s mind control thing is hilarious- and that it actually worked on Andy! I had to warn my daughter not to try it in school today- I could just picture it (she’s a big bad high school senior)- telling her principal-
Give me the day off from school today…Do it…DO IT!! 5-4-3-2…DO IT… DO IT…5-4-3-2…Shake my hand…DO IT!!!

  11. ellebell says:

Dwight’s organizational chart cracked me UPPP! LOVED the colored lines that indicated:
    green=money
    yellow=coward
    pink=menstrual cycle

And when he pulled down the clear overlay (back-up plan) that indicated that HE ruled everyone???? Priceless! ;-]

  12. Christina says:

I am getting very very angry with Toby and his Breaking-up-Jim-and-Pam-schemes!!!!

But I LOVED the fake proposal, that is soooo something my husband would have done! :)

  13. Adventures In Babywearing says:

Oh, but what about the Fluffy Fingers! I was sad, but relieved that he didn’t try that technique!

  14. ellinghouse says:

I really loved it when Dwight tried to turn a profit on the car….that made me laugh so hard. Oh, and the end….a bit on the stupid side. But I still loved it and can’t wait until next week!

    May 2nd, 2008 at 7:14 am

  15. Johna says:

OK, this is the first time I have ever uttered these words: I did not like The Office last night. (cringe)

I’m sorry, I like my Michael Scott, all goofy and overbearing, with no-one being mean to him. Very uncomfortable to watch.

However that being said, I loved the last line of the night to Phyllis “OK, everyone out, but Phyllis”. I did crack up at that.

Oh and NO ONE better be mean to Jim, that was just WRONG, on many many levels.

    May 2nd, 2008 at 7:23 am

  16. Mama D says:

I felt a little weird watching last night, everything seemed a little off. Things are getting mean people! Watch your back!

    May 2nd, 2008 at 7:33 am

  17. Sister Honey Bunch says:

I totally agree about the Jim thing!

My husband and I were laughing our butts off with the ugly comments when Pam wore her glasses. So funny.

    May 2nd, 2008 at 7:45 am

  18. Eileen says:

I thought Dwight’s madlib about Andy was even funnier than Angela’s madlib (which was also funny).

    I loved last night’s episode!

    May 2nd, 2008 at 7:52 am

  19. Erin says:

I’m so glad we had the return of Michael getting fake street advice from Darryl. Newsies aside, my favorite quote from that moment:
Before you know it, you’ve forgotten the whole thing. Y’all just go to church together. Get ice cream cones.

I also enjoy moments of Michael hating on Toby for no reason.
    -Hey, you’re poor;
    -Hey, your mom’s dead;
    That’s what friends do.
    You’re so…white.

  20. Jessie says:

The comedy routine really was painfully long, but I guess that is the point! So how long before something happens to wreck Pam and Jim? You know it’s coming.

    May 2nd, 2008 at 8:17 am

  21. Suzie says:

I totally sympathize with Pam and her glasses. I had my own pair. I’m also going to try Dwight’s coercion method with my kids. I’ll let you know if it works.

I so wanted Michael to do the fluffy fingers. I can’t believe he didn’t.

I’m ready for Dwight to lure Angela away from Andy.

    May 2nd, 2008 at 9:18 am

  22. Sara says:

Michael, when talking about how the office needs some zing:

And Pam, she’s not even trying anymore.

  23. RubiaLala says:

    I love the fake proposals.

  24. Lauren says:

Severe weather updates interrupted the ENTIRE show! Severe weather that was nowhere NEAR my house. Thank goodness for online episodes.

    May 2nd, 2008 at 10:21 am

  25. Andrea says:

I was disappointed that Michael didn’t try the fluffy fingers thing - I was totally expecting that! And could someone just kick Toby in the butt already? He’s so mean!

    May 2nd, 2008 at 10:56 am

  26. Laura says:

Hey BooMama, I have no idea what anyone is talking about, but that is only because my husband and I are only half way through watching episodes from last season. (yes, we were a bit late to the dance!) Our friends were the ones to get us hooked on this show. We just watched my favourite episode thus far. It was from Back from Vacation, and Pam is crying when Dwight shows up and starts taking off his jacket (I poked my hubby at this point and was saying look he’s actually going to be sweet)I no sooner had those words out then Dwight was wrapping his jacket around himself and remarking about how hot it was!! And then the whole PMSing statement…I was laughing so hard!!
Sorry to write about such a long ago episode but I just had to tell someone how much I loved that moment! Thanks for listening..or should I say reading!

  27. Miscellanous From Missy says:

Oh. My. Goodness. I completely forgot that yesterday was Thursday! Is that possible? We were so busy at Tulip Time that I didn’t even think about The Office. That’s probably a good thing; shows my priorities are right, right? Or are they? ;-)

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to watch the full episode online.

    May 2nd, 2008 at 11:31 am

  28. Coralie says:

Last night was a total disappointment: Earl was creepy, Scrubs was so creepy we didn’t even make it to the 1st commercial, Stanley stopped being lovably crunchy, Ryan is still on drugs, Toby and Ryan are going to ruin Jim and Pam. Why does Michael hate Toby, really? Usually that’s funny, and usually I feel sorry for Toby (like last week - Costa Rica) but this week it crossed a line. I guess all of those things crossed the line between funny and sad.

(I keep hoping Ryan will get fired, and Jim will get his job and Pam will become a hip artist in New York supported by her executive husband. My husband agrees, and says it’s a sign we’re far too invested in a fictional television show.)

Plus my daughter had a fever of 102 and couldn’t sleep. That may have tainted my view of things.

    May 2nd, 2008 at 12:33 pm

  29. lynn says:

While there were some sad parts to this episode - it was still pretty funny.

    1) Pam, translate!
    2) Its just words coming from an ugly scientist.
    3) This has the potential to be your best idea ever.

I have never liked Ryan - he’s been a twerp from the beginning. I only liked him together with Kelly.

    May 2nd, 2008 at 1:41 pm

  30. Megan@SortaCrunchy says:

I laughed out loud when Dwight said “Andy and Angela seem very happy. I hope nothing horrible ever happens to them.”

“Stanley is a beautiful, sassy, powerful black man.”

    Ryan? Grrrrrrr. Ick.

why no fluffy fingers? was so waiting for it.

  32. Shanda says:

After seeing the past three episodes, I have now come to the conclusion that it is now the writers’ goal not to make us laugh but to make us as awkward and uncomfortable as possible.
That said, last night was Dwight’s night to shine. Every time I caught myself laughing it was Dwight. I have a feeling the mind control approach will be a recurring thing.

    May 2nd, 2008 at 5:26 pm

  33. Shauna says:

I thought last night’s was the best since the writers’ strike–granted, that’s not saying much. But there were some genuinely LOL parts, which have already been mentioned above.

    May 2nd, 2008 at 6:50 pm

  34. Sarah's in the Midst of It says:

I watched it last night with my sister. Painful! I wanted to cry for Jim. But the fake proposal in the meeting was awesome. :)

    May 2nd, 2008 at 8:51 pm

  35. Angie Garza says:

I had mixed emotions as well. The lines were spot on. But, the scenes with Stanley were too tense for me. I love the “fluffy fingers” and Dwight’s organizational chart was hilarious! angie

  36. cara says:

    It’s like a mock execution
I’ve got a mad lib for ya
    fired like a heart attack

watching the parts that make you want to crawl under something are alot like a mock execution…

  37. steve says:

It was funny! But . . . what is going to happen between Jim and Ryan? I see some trouble brewing . . .

    May 3rd, 2008 at 12:53 am

  38. Melinda says:

Loved that episode! I loved the whole fake firing scene and when Michael was getting gang advice — tickling. This show always gives me a good chuckle.
