Returning With More Mediocre Than Ever Before

May 12, 2008

What? You mean you don’t want to read about this past Thursday’s episode of “The Office” for THE NEXT SWEET FOREVER?

Really?

Shocking.

So. Anyway.

HOW ARE Y’ALL?

We went to Nashville this past weekend, and that’s part of the reason for my extended absence from the computer. Because the last few times I’ve been there my schedule has been oh-so-wonderfully jam-packed, but this trip our little family really needed some good “hanging out” time. To recharge ye olde familial batteries, so to speak.

And that is what we did.

Also, yesterday Sister made the best cheese grits I have ever eaten in my life, which is saying something because I have been known to PUT DOWN SOME CHEESE GRITS in my time.

They were so delicious that - no kidding - Alex walked away from the table with grits IN HIS HAIR. I think that he was so intent on shoveling the grits into his mouth as quickly as possible that he lost a little accuracy with his aim.

Oh, he is his mama’s child.

What a tender heritage he has.

Alex was pretty much buck wild for the entirety of the weekend, so much so that Sister has vowed that before his next visit she is going to tie a rope to the chandelier in her foyer and just let him swing from it like the five year-old little monkey that he is.

I think she may be on to something.

So now we’re home and my house is a wreck and we need some groceries and I really, really want to tackle a flowerbed in our backyard that has been neglected since well before we moved here.

So I guess I pretty much just made a to-do list, and not only that I think that by sharing said to-do list I have also COMMITTED TO THE FLOWERBED PROJECT, RIGHT HERE ON THE INTERNET, WHERE PEOPLE WILL ASK ME QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW THE FLOWERBED IS COMING ALONG.

Nothing like a little bloggy accountability for motivation.

See you in a little bit, interpeeps.

Because I think it goes without saying that I’ve missed you terribly.

I was just thrilled to come here and see a new title without the word “blisty” in it. Welcome back. Now go do some weeding.

    Cheese grits sound, um, interesting.

Sometime after your flowerbed is up and running, I’d love to give away some books on your bloggy-blog. (how’s that for a gentle reminder?)

    Glad to have you back!

I just moved up to Nashville (actually just outisde Franklin) a couple months ago…and we love it! Glad you had a great trip!

Welcome back! So, um, how’s that flowerbed coming along?

I need to do a large amount of painting in my house, which has had beige walls for the entire 10 years I’ve lived here, so I’m a fine one to talk. :-P

if that wasn’t a song begging to be written, i don’t know what was.

“put down some cheese grits, just like the ones in his hair.”

THAT, my fair boomama, is pure gold.

i’m so glad you’re back, and even more so that you and your “familials” had some well-deserved time together!

Hey Sophie…I should probably just email you this but nah…LOVED Bham this weekend. I’m ready to move the family there. We played ball off Acton Rd….which I called Action Rd all weekend.

Didn’t make it to church bc of the VERY BAD WEATHER/TORNADO WARNINGS the night before and that messed with baseball game times. :(

Glad your weekend was so much fun! Now…get after that flower bed!
    Hugs~

So what was the secret to the deliciousness of the cheese grits?

I have some azaleas I need to plant. You almost inspired me :)

  10. Jenn says:

I’ll admit, I was wondering what happened to you. Glad you had a nice weekend. So, I’m going to ask a question that will prove to many that I am from Eastern Canada and have never been anywhere near the Southern US. What do cheese grits consist of and how come they are so good?

  11. ellinghouse says:

good luck with the flowers. I got a garden and some major mulch that’s calling my name…blagh.

Can we see some before and after pics of the garden?

  13. Megan(FriedOkra) says:

I have found that the mere mention of grits on my blog brings people OUT OF THE WOODWORK. Grits have a certain mystique. And a profound Googleability, apparently. But they are HARD to get out of hair, as will surely have discovered by now.

  14. e-dub says:

Ah, Boo, welcome back. I love any post with mention of cheese + grits. Reunited…and it feels so good?

    May 12th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

  15. Shalee says:

Dadgum girl! Where on earth did you get these taste-defying grits? And can you get me the recipe because being two states over makes me think that I won’t be going to get your cheesy-grits anytime soon.

Ahhh, I love that blogging accountability stuff. If blogging had been around in Jesus’ time, this type of confession and encouragement would have been added to the scriptures, I just know it. Because we blogger? We’re bossy like that. We know how to get things done.

  16. Leslie says:

Very happy to have you back! I need to have me some cheese grits. I love a good grit.

    May 12th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

  17. pam says:

I’m with Shalee on the recipe for the cheese grits, because I am a firm believer in everything being better with cheese.

I’ve missed you too, dear Sophie, and oh so glad to hear about your “buck wild” Alex’s eating experience. I haven’t used “buck wild’ in a while, but that term totally describes my JD Green to a T.

Thanks for reminding me of such important things like terminology to describe my wild one : ) You are just a wealth of great info.

  18. d says:

I love gardening, if it would just stop raining here I’d be out in my flowerbeds. I want pictures of your flowerbed. Before and afters make me so happy almost as happy as a monkey swinging from the chandelier.

  19. Judy S. says:

Can you believe that I have NEVER tasted grits of any kind? I guess that’s what I get for being a mid-westerner.

  22. Dawn in NC says:

I LOVE cheese grits and would love to have Sister’s recipe to compare to others I’ve tried. Face-grubbin’, hair-rinsin’ cheese grits have gotta be some special kind of good!

  23. Dnksmommy/ Lorrie says:

Missed you too! Soooo, how’s the flower bed going? When you’re done, will you come and work on one for me? My OCD doesn’t allow me to touch bugs and dirt and stuff….. but I love flowers.
I’ll even try my hand at making some Cheese Grits for ya!

  24. Kim says:

  25. Muddy says:

I had some grits this morning, though the kind with just butter, no cheese.

Yes, you and your posts were missed, but glad you found some down time to enjoy your family and get away too.

Flower bed…what kind of flowers are you planting?

    May 12th, 2008 at 2:23 pm

  26. Christine says:

Glad to have you back with a non-blisty post! I’d love to hear more about the Nashville activities alluded to in the podcast last week…that sounded like such a fun time! I had to get pancake batter out of a kidlet’s long blonde hair this weekend so I can sympathize with the grits in the hair!

I love the gardening thing. I got a little carried away with the tomato plants this spring and I have 10 tomatoes in containers on my patio along with blueberries, boysenberries, herbs, lemon tree, zucchini, some roses and a lovely hydrangea. I knew I’d been officially bitten by the bug when I picked an earthworm up with my bare hands and tossed into a pot to do it’s worm thing. Didn’t even creep me out ’til after the fact! (Bad choice of colloquialism there…it didn’t actually bite me :) Good luck with your flower bed!

Enough exclamation points for today! Glad you’re home safe!

  29. Holly Smith says:

I really want flower beds…I really do! But the forecast is calling for more snow tonight. Do you think anyone will notice if I take pictures of someone else’s yard–in Texas perhaps? Hee hee.

I’m glad you’re home…and the grits recipe?? Can your sister share it? I love me some grits… the best grits we ever tasted was at Duff Green Mansion in Vicksburg, MS. Mmmm Good!

  30. Roxanne says:

Glad to have you back Miss Mama. Now, Boo… I must say, after reading the Office post over and over for a few days… I may have to start watching it! LOL Just kidding. I am so glad that you had a wonderful time.
I hope that you had a wonderful Mother’s Day.

  31. Amy says:

Are you done yet? I mean, with the garden?
And the monkey business? Yea, we should have gone with the jungle theme for my son’s room instead of the great outdoors theme. I know we should probably just go ahead and make his bed out of some monkey bars so he can get a little exercise before bedtime. Sounds like y’all had some good quality time together. Nothin’ better than that!

    May 12th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

  32. Jackie Sue says:

Yes, so, welcome back. And as others have asked….recipe pleeeaasseee! How was your visit with “frydaddy”???? See, I WAS paying attention to EVERY word on ya’lls podcast. You guys crack me up. Just the laughing is fun. Wishing you the best with your garden. I love the results, but the rest is just hard hard work and my muscles ache for days afterword. How’s that for some encouragement???

    May 12th, 2008 at 4:49 pm

  33. Amy Beth @ Ministry So Fabulous! says:

Wait! I see you’ve been asked about the Puffy Muffin! I need to know as well! :) I worked at a ministry in Nashville for four months and loved the Puffy Muffin!

  34. shelley says:

SO HOW IS THE FLOWER BED PROJECT GOING?

    Just a little motivation :)

Actually, I will be interested to see it, I have few flower beds that need some attention too.

    May 12th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

  35. PJ says:

Flower beds. Did you have to reminde me??? I have large pots (I limit my black thumb skills to containers) waiting for something green to be placed inside them….as soon as the temperature gets above 65, I will do so!!! Maybe…

    May 12th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

  36. Daphne says:

Aah … cheese grits. The only thing better is Zea’s corn grits and if you’ve never tried them, I’m so sorry. I’m not sure if Zea’s is just a Louisiana restaurant or not, but if you’re ever down here … you MUST try them. They are to die for!

    May 12th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

  37. Tara says:

I have a grits question for you. A friend of mine is moving away and has cleaned out her kitchen and moved the weird food she didn’t know what to do with to my kitchen. That prefaced, I have a bag of grits. I live in Minnesota. We don’t eat grits here. What in the heck do I do with grits???

    May 13th, 2008 at 1:41 pm

  38. Mama D says:

At every family function growing up, someone brought the cheese grits…and this is from a Ft. Worth, Texas girl! I guess we are still considered the south in some ways…

    May 13th, 2008 at 9:02 pm

  39. Teresa says:

First, cheese grits-sorry BooMama but personally I think they are nasty! And I’m a southern girl too. I live near Bowling Green and even though that’s north of you, I still consider myself a southerner (even if I don’t like cheese grits). Next, flower beds, I grow weeds and children, not flowers. I think they are beautiful and I love them. My wonderful had a green thumb but mine is purple and refuses to grow anything but weeds. I wish you good luck with yours though and would love to see pictures of it when you are finished. One more thing-I loved the description of your son visiting your relatives. It sounds so much like boys, when they were younger. I have four and there are some relatives we never visited because they either had white carpet or too many non-touchables! Love your site BooMama!
