American Idol – Top 3

So I should probably pretend to be excited about tonight’s show.

Right?

I mean, it’s Top 3 and all.

I AM SO FAKE EXCITED ABOUT TONIGHT’S SHOW, Y’ALL!

David Archuleta – “And So It Goes” – I love this song. And the little bit of a cappella at the beginning was brilliant. This was probably the first time all year that I’ve really responded to one of his performances…I just thought it was dead-on.

Also: I would like to hug him. Because there’s something about him that strikes me as a little bit sad. And I would like to hug him and cook him some fried chicken, thank you.

“With You” – Probably a smart move on his part to sing a Chris Brown song. It felt a little WRONG, ALL WRONG to me, but I’m also not sixteen. And I have a feeling that this performance probably went over REALLY well with his core audience. So good for him for breaking out of the mold.

“Longer” – Beautiful song. But I was bored.

(I’m sorry.)

(Please forgive me.)

Syesha Mercado – “If I Ain’t Got You” – I thought that was a total home run for her. I also really like that she didn’t go heavy on the dramatics with her performance – just a straightforward, no-nonsense approach. And I liked it.

“Fever” – This was a little too theatrical for me – it felt more like something from the talent competition in Miss America than a song someone her age would actually record. She sounded fine, but I think strategy-wise it was probably a misfire.

“Hit Me Up” – It was a really fun song – but it wasn’t a distinctive song. I don’t think that three years from now anyone will be saying, “Hey, remember when Syesha sang that song from ‘Happy Feet’ on Idol? THAT WAS AWESOME.”

David Cook – “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” – SUCH an interesting song choice. And moreso than any other contestant, he can take ANYTHING and make it sound modern. I loved that he stuck with the original feel of the song for the first section, then went into something with more of an alternative sound at the end. SO great. Loved it.

“Dare You To Move” – I was tickled to hear him break out the Switchfoot. However, I didn’t think this was his strongest vocal performance – it sounded like he was a little sharp or flat or off or something. A little bit of a disappointment, all things considered.

“I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” – I’m trying not to be swayed by the fact that I don’t ever have to hear this song EVER AGAIN IN MY WHOLE LIFE EVER. It’s right up there with “My Heart Will Go On” in my opinion. I liked the edgier ending, though, and he redeemed himself from the Switchfoot song. So in that sense, well done.

Top Two: David Archuleta and David Cook.

And did I mention that I’d like to give David Archuleta a hug and some fried chicken?

  1. Hi Boo,

We really liked Syesha tonight and kinda hope she and David C are top two, although it prob won’t happen. I hear ya, though, about David A and the fried chicken. Although, I don’t enjoy frying my own chicken. My mama..now she can fry some chicken!!! How bout you fry him some chicken and I’ll cook him a little grit.

    Jeannie

  2. Boo Mama. I think David A is sad. Did you hear his dad was banned from being backstage because he’s such a pain and causes trouble? I bet it felt really weird for him to NOT have his dad with him. So. Yeah. I’m thinking fried chicken and a snuggle would hit the spot for the kid now.

  3. I’m so with you on not really being excited about Idol anymore. I like the Davids but Cook always looks so smug to me that I can’t totally like him. So I’m sure he’ll win.

  4. You are so right! Each statement you made rings true…especially about the hug and fried chicken!

I read your blog often…but I need to post more. You really, truly crack me up!

    Jen

  5. Rebecca says:

I hear you on Archuleta. I feel bad every time I say something about him because I am afriad his dad will find out and punish him. (I know a little irrational.)
I am, however, from Syesh’s hometown so she is my girl all the way. At least I admit my bias, though. I caught her at one of her stops on her hometown visit!
She certainly needed a lot of people to come out of the woodwork and vote their fingers off tonight.
Enjoy your Idol recaps each week, just commenting for the first time.

  6. I totally missed the show and I am not even sad.
    I am over it
(I had a girls night and had me some blackened halibut with garlic mashed potatoes and chocolate cake – yummy!)

The way I see the while AI thing is – Just go ahead and pick one of the David’s as the winner and be done with it

    Blessings
    Kim

  7. Yes, poor little David Archuletta. I’m sure he missed his Dad being around. I think some down home Southern cooking would be in order for this little fella. Topped of with some milk and home made chocolate chip cookies!

  8. I’ve been worried about David A. for a month. What happened to the wide-eyed giddy boy we saw at the beginning of the season. If I was his mama I’d be worried sick. Poor kid.

Oh and the actual show? Eh? I think it will be David and David. Shocking. Although I think Syesha has more personality than either one of them.

  9. Little David worries me. I hear ya on that.

  10. so disappointed..the storms we had here messed up my satellite signal. Every one of the songs sounded totally out of tune.

  11. Ha! I’m not the only one who hates…I mean strongly dislikes that Aerosmith song. But I love David C.

  12. David A. does seem a little sad now that you mention it. To me, he always looks like he’s about to wet his pants, but I’ll go along with you on the sad thing.

Enjoyed your review! Love your blog!

  13. This is the first year I am soooooo out of the Idol loop… Hmmm… I’m even missing Dancing with the Stars…. but not Lost or The Office :)

  14. You’re right- David A. did look that way, especially in the first song. I agree with you on the Aerosmith song. It’s a part of the 80’s I’d so like to forget!

  15. I was tickled about the Switchfoot too! No I dare YOU to move! Too cool :)

I agree that it wasn’t his best vocals. That song is hard…slowslowslowROCKING!!!slowslowslow…
    You get the idea :)

  16. Dan Folgelberg, Billy Joel. Now THAT’S my era!

  17. Enough about Jeff Archuleta. He isn’t anything what the media is making him out to be. In case anyone hasn’t heard, Jason Castro’s interview – he was actually asked about Mr. Archuleta and he said he was nothing but polite, decent and friendly and never did anything to jeopardize any of the other contestants or his own sons. Jeff is David’s father. He is looking out for him like ALL fathers should be doing for their children. Let’s just compare this to the latest Miley Cyrus scandal, if we will. Where was Billy when his daughter was being photographed draped in a sheet? Now the poor girl has to publicly stick up for herself because her own parents won’t come out and speak on her behalf? I don’t know about you but as a parent, I am a parent EVEN after my children reach the age of 18 (ask all three of them) I’m all up in their business. You have to be this day and age.
The Archuleta’s are good people with good intentions for their family. I wish people would realize that the media cannot always be trusted. There are always two sides to every story.
    Thanks.

  18. I hate to tell you this again, but check out comment #21.

I’m still watching the rest of the show. Here in Guam we get it on our Wed night (early Wed am for you).
    K

  19. I haven’t watched even one second of Idol this season, yet somehow your account of it is still intriguing to me. You’re good.

  20. I am so excited we finally will have a finale with real live suspense. Usually the only mystery surrounding the night is how medicated Paula will actually be. Can’t wait! (And Go David Cook!!!)

  21. Re: David Archuleta and your wanting to hug him — we were saying the very same thing. There was something about him last night that was really sad. Even my husband commented on it, saying he seemed “beaten down.”

I imagine it’s hard and a bit depressive to be 17 and suddenly be working so hard and so constantly. Plus, it’s prom time, finals, graduation, etc. Maybe he’s squeezing all that in and is exhausted. Who knows? I’d bring him home for chicken also, and maybe some sweet tea.

  22. My hubby has been saying for weeks that David A always looks like he is about to cry. All of this is too much for anyone under 21 in my opinion! We need to pray for him…

  23. Ditto, everything.

  24. Is it just me, or do the contestants even look like they’re bored with this & ready for it to be over? None of them seem as giddy as the finalists in previous seasons. Kinda sad. I’ve been ready for David Cook to win and be done with it for weeks. And you’re right…David Archuleta needs a hug.

  25. I’m thinking that David A should be getting ready for summer vacation, not Idol summer tour. Too much for a 17 year old boy. A big ole hug and some fried chicken, mashed potatos, corn, biscuits, and sweet tea would fix him right up though.

Ditto on the Aerosmith song, that is pure dee velveeta cheese right there. gag.

  26. David A…I’ve been a bit worried about him too. I guess I’m concerened that this is all too much for him. I think a hug and some fried chicken would do wonders for him. And maybe a good, long nap. And some mashed potaotes and gravy. Wait, I think I need all this too!

  27. All this talk about fried chicken is making me REALLY hungry! Can I get myself some o’ that yumminess?

I agree…it feels time to wrap things up, but I’ve sure enjoyed all these reviews!

Really, now I want fried chicken! Off to find me some food…

  28. love aerosmith, but HATE their only #1 hit. David A has such a sweetness and purity about him that is rare in a 17 year old. Dad was probably just over-doing it in trying to protect his kid. Too bad. Because of the sweetness and purity, I don’t want him to take first place. He’ll get a contract for sure no matter what and I hope he has great success without being corrupted.

  29. I SO WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with you on David Cook’s rendition of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.

This song selection alone proves why Simon is the best judge. He didn’t throw David a lame, under-handed pitch with an obvious, easy song. He made David stretch, which he does oh. so. well!

  30. I sense your AI enthusiasm waning…mine, too, for some reason..I didn’t get to watch because I had just gotten home from the hospital. I’ll spare you the details, but Sunday night in the hospital, the cable went out, but I had my laptop, so what did I do…by myself…alone in the hospital…listened to the BigBoo Cast with a side of Fry, of course. Thanks for the laughs.

  31. I really think David C. has the most talent and originality but sadly I don’t think he will take the final prize:(

  32. Wonderful recap.
As lovely a voice as David Archuletta has, he just seems sort of oddly… vacant. I really hope David Cook wins – he’s a much more compelling performer.

  33. Well, I hope David C. wins. But those little Archies are determined and will be killer with the redial buttons…it’s going to be a toss up. And I do miss Jason Castro!

  34. I wrote a blog regarding David Archuleta vs. King David in the bible. Hope y’all get a kick out of it!
