I Can’t Help It I Have To Chime In It’s A Sickness

We’re just now making our way through the American Idol finale, and as far as I’m concerned the only way to watch the AI finale is on the DVR with remote in hand.

Because I don’t know if y’all noticed, but there is a good bit of filler in the last show.

No, really. There is.

But contrary to past final results shows, there were actually a few parts of this one that I loved.

I would now like to tell you about those parts, oh thank you.

- Seal – I adore Seal. So it was big fun for me to hear him sing “Waiting For You,” which I used to play all the time in the car when Alex was a baby because, well, I’d been waiting for him. And the song seemed appropriate.

- Carly and Michael’s duet – SWEET MERCY, if those two had been singing together during the entire competition, they’d have won hands-down. I kinda wish they’d become an official duo – the sum is greater than its parts, you know? I thought they were phenomenal.

- The Pips – Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey, Jr. doing some sort of choreographed background dancing? COUNT ME IN, I WILL SEE YOUR MOTION PICTURE.

- Chikeze – IHAVEMISSEDHIMSOMUCHICAN’TEVENTELLYOU. Loved hearing him sing on the George Michael medley, which, by the way, was actually a really engaging medley because the songs are still so good.

- Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. George Michael – I think “Praying For Time” is a brilliant song, and I don’t think anyone sings it better than he does. I had chillbumps right down to my toes during his whole performance. And I will be watching it again in just a few minutes.

SPOILER ALERT: IF YOU LIVE ON THE WEST COAST, YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT I’M ABOUT TO TALK ABOUT THE WINNER. I FEEL THAT I SHOULD WARN YOU.

- David Cook – HE WON! We were totally surprised and tickled to death. Both Davids are going to have incredible careers, I think, but from my 30-something perspective, it was refreshing to see the guy with a little more experience take the prize, especially in this Disney-saturated musical age (see: Hannah Montana, Jonas Bros., etc. and so forth and so on).

Well done, David the Elder.

Mighty well done indeed.

So. What did y’all think?

If you want to chime in, you know the bloggy drill.

I have found the ONLY way to view AI is with remote in hand. What in the world did we ever do before the DVR.

Two words: gold lah-may. You thought it went out of style.

Totally stoked that David Cook pulled it out by 12 million votes. Phew.

Looking forward to BooFest 2008!

Whoohoo I was thrilled! Man I wish I had thought to watch it after I recorded it…it really was full of filler. Oh my word that Carly and MJ song knocked my socks off…

What? No Mr. Linky? I am CRUSHED!!!

And BTW, I claim part ownership of David the Elder since he’s from my area. Wonder if he’ll send me part of the earnings? :>)

In a related matter, tickets are almost sold out for one night of the Idol tour here, going for $39.50 + a $10 handling fee plus parking plus….to START. They go up from there. That’s for the back of the auditorium in the nosebleed section. Sheesh.

YAY DAVID COOK!!!!!

BTW, I was all up in the Bryan Adams medley.

I LOVE watching this with my DVR! However, I forgot to set it to record for a few minutes late, which means at the exact moment that Ryan Seacrest said “….COOK!” my recording stopped!!!!! It was not good! I have spent the last 30 minutes frantically searching Youtube waiting for someone to put a video of the whole thing up there, and finally someone did. So I got to see the crying and the hugging and the singing…all is good.

In the words of my husband, “I have faith in America again.” Hooray for David Cook!

OK… I’m fessing up. I don’t watch American Idol.

BUT, I faithfully read your blog. So I have found myself coming to know these people. ALL of them. And tonight- knowing the finale was on- I must have asked my husband 4 or 5 times if the winner was posted on the internet…

SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER… should’ve just come to the source right?? Should have known you’d post the winner immediately.

THanks for keeping me up on all the need to know information out there. :)

Hearing that Bryan Adams medley made me want to pull out my piano sheet music from junior high.

Sigh.

I sure love a good medley.

p.s. i will pay big bucks to see carly and michael perform together.

I was pretty surprised that David Cook won, but I am so excited for him! He’s awesome! I think David Archuletta will see huge success as well!

Alexis May 21, 2008 at 11:24 pm

I am just so flippin’ excited. I cried along with him. And the end where they panned into his brother who said “That’s my brother”. OMG… what an awesome family.

As far as the other parts, I totally am with you on Michael Johns and Carly. Hot darn.

I loved Cook with ZZ Top. You know that had to be a dream come true.

And I LOVE the song Apologize. Imagine my surprise when David A came out and started singing. I actually was very impressed.

Ahhhhh… David Cook won :)

I was really excited that David Cook one too! A Missouri Boy!!! It’s the first time I’ve felt like the contestant with the Most talent actually one. I really like David A. too, and I can’t wait to see what he makes of himself.

Filler? NO!

It’s terribly sad that it doesn’t take more than David Cook winning Idol to thrill me, but . . . that’s all it takes!!! I’ve been rooting for him since day 1!! This season, by far, has been the most talented, in my opinion. I’m right there with you on the George Michael & Seal performances. And, I loved Carly & Michael together, too. I thoroughly enjoyed the ZZ Top and One Republic performances, too. It was an AWESOME finale this time around – - – enjoyable & entertaining & not just a bunch of “filler.” ‘Twas a GREAT night!!!

Enjoyed the show “LIVE” here on the West Coast.

And I SO need to play the guitar and wear nice makeup and a pretty dress and be barefoot and sing on stage. But alas, I will change diapers fix dinners and scrub flattened raisins off the floor. This here, is the Next Ameri-Mom Idol.

Completely enjoyed the whole show. Enjoyed it even more when they finally announced that David C won by such a landslide. Simply amazing!

Well, for starters, shocked is the understatement of the century for me. I can’t believe we 30-somethings beat out the tweenies on vote night! I’m a happy as a pig in mud, though. No lie!

Amanda May 22, 2008 at 2:06 am

I’m so HAPPY the elder David won for precisely the same reason you mentioned. And as for that Pips bit, it was the best part of the AI Variety Hour. By Far.

Well, except for the last thirty-eight seconds where they announced that stunning win. Hooray for David Cook!

Excellent season. Probably one of the best yet. I’m going to miss watching. I’m definitely addicted to AI.

Congrats to David Cook, 12 million extra votes. Amazing.

David Archuleta is still very young but mark my word, he will go places. He’s so talented and professional. I was so pleased to see how well he carried himself this evening. It is obvious he’s had a very good upbringing. He’s still #1 in my book.

So agree – I am glad the Elder Dave won. Little David will have a huge career, though, that is so for sure. And I lurve Jack Black and Ben Stiller, too!

I was gone for most of the show, but it is recorded…yaaaaaeee tivo!

That being said, I pretty much wasn’t upset for missing so much of the JUNK! But…after reading your highlights…I realize I DO wanna go back and see a bit more.

Earlier today I wrote that I thought David Cook had intentionally taken a dive to let David A win…lol, guess I was wrong (or at least the American voters were right!).

Thrilled with the results–we’ll be seeing lots of those boys no matter what!

:)

I was so pleased that D.C. won! I agree, both are huge talents, but he really is such a better performer, all things considered. Maybe it is the age thing.

And that duet. Oh my WORD I could watch that over and over and OVER again. I hate that we didn’t get to see more of Carly and Michael this season. :-(

Am I the only Archuleta fan? I am so sad, I might just have to eat chocolate all day to recover…and maybe a couple of Starbucks too. I thought “Archie” was the sweetest, cutest kid ever. But honestly, Cook is more “idol” material. But I’m still sad.

I watched on DVR, too. And, I wanted to throw the remote across the room – I heard everything up to, “the winner of Americal Idol 2008 is.” and then it went dead. Oh how i wish they would just make it know to record the entire show, not just time alloted. I have learned my lesson to record the next show as well. So glad for YouTube so I can see everyone’s reactions, etc. Yea David Cook – I voted Tuesday night for the first time ever!

Best two parts of the night? Besides announcing that the rightful David was taking his throne?! The Bryan Adams segment (omigosh, he hasn’t changed a bit!) and the David Cook with ZZ Top song. LOVED how much fun it was and how much fun DC had with it all!

Kelly May 22, 2008 at 6:43 am

I still can’t believe David Cook won!!! I was shocked and THRILLED!!!! I think he was equally shocked! I’m so happy for him!
Bryan Adams and George Michael medleys – it was like reliving my high school days.

Reply

Jennifer May 22, 2008 at 7:13 am

Totally agree about the filler. I mean, Mariska Hargatay, there was a lot.

Reply

Addie May 22, 2008 at 8:50 am

I was never more thankful for DVR than last night, and ALL OF THE FILLER!

I LOVED Seal! I had forgotten how much his voice is like butter. It was so nice to hear him again. I need to start thinking of him as a performer again and not Mr. Klum. I’m also a huge George Michael fan, but seeing him perform unfortunately made me feel old. ah well.

I was so completely shocked about David C., that my mouth dropped. Of course we’re very hometown proud here. (Everybody likes to think they know someone that knows someone that knows him.) But wherever he may have been from, he was just the more well-rounded talent.

What a night! I enjoyed it immensely and was so glad that “big” David won! I was proud of “little” David’s composure, too. Great season! Looking forward to next year’s AI posts of yours already!

I was absolutely thrilled. That victory was well deserved. And his FAMILY – how can I not be thrilled for his mom, knowing what she is facing with her oldest son? It was a blast, and I enjoyed your commentary through it all!

HOOOOOORAAAAAYYYY!!!! So stinkin siked for David COOK, there was a whole lotta rejoicing in our household last night! :) Great season…great finale!! :) Thanks for hosting the AI linky…you rock!

I really think that David Cook won because Simon was so mean to him the night before. I thought Simon was being SO not nice and I couldn’t stand the thought of it being a total blow out and Cook losing so I picked up my phone and voted. It was the first time I had voted all season. I think you said that you voted as well. I think Simon prompted many people to vote who normally wouldn’t have. So glad Cook won!

Kim May 22, 2008 at 11:08 am

I was so excited David C won
I screamed and clapped my hands when DC won and my little ones said I woke them up so they knew DC had won – LOL!

I liked them both but I felt DC was just more original and took more chances
Have a blessed day

I know you liked David A, but I think he needs to simmer for a few more years so we can get him at his absolute best. Great show overall, LOVE IT!

Reply

Leslie Ruth May 22, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Ok, wait. Correction. I think I confused FryDaddy’s preference with yours. YOU like David C, like me. So yes, yay for David the Elder!

Sorry…(insert sheepish grin here)

Barb @ A Chelsea Morning May 22, 2008 at 12:41 pm

I went ahead and linked my latest post because although it’s about something else, the first part expresses how much I love it that big David beat little David. Both are amazing of course, but I so wanted David Cook to win, from the beginning, and I didn’t think he would.

And George Michael? Oh.my.word. I’m 57 and Father Figure still does it for me.

joannmski May 22, 2008 at 1:31 pm

SO happy. And it was great to see all of the contestants together again, they are much happier as a group than these last few weeks which were pretty stressful. I really do like this season’s people.

Is American Idol a TV show or something?

I only have one idol, and He isn’t on TV much.

I, too, was happy to see the elder David win because of the age thing. It’s exciting to see. I’m very happy for him.
And his brother, he was so excited for him!

Becoming Me May 22, 2008 at 2:58 pm

All AI results shows are pretty much unbearable without TIVO or DVR, but this one was fairly decent. I was totally expecting David A. to be the winner and I actually let out a hoot when David C. won. Now, I think David A is adorable and fiercely talented and like you think his career will be stellar, but David Cook’s style would probably sell me more cds.

Reply

Nicki May 22, 2008 at 6:34 pm

I was so surprised! I don’t know if I like it or not. I think he has a better stage performance than David A but, I don’t think he has a better voice! It was a hard one this time!! But they are both going to be so big anyways!

Yea for David C.! I was so thrilled also!
I totally agree with all of your favorite parts, especially Seal and Carly and Michael. And the part where you have to watch it with DVR remote in hand, oh yes that is the only way.

Reply

I watched it Tuesday for the first time this season cause of the finale hype…it was a no-brainer for me—David A. I bet David C. was better on the other shows. But, I am older, and I loved David A. So what does that mean??? lol Sometimes our words don’t come out like we mean.
