While I recognize that the title of this post might lead you to believe that the choir pulled some sort of practical joke at church yesterday morning, that is not the case at all, my friends.
Please do allow me to explain, oh thank you.
About three years ago I gave the husband a CD called “Hymned” by Bart Millard, the lead singer of Mercy Me. And we were crazy about the CD the very first time we listened to it. I loved being able to play Bart’s CD-o-hymns in the car with my little fella – who, if memory serves, was around two years old at the time. And even though the words to “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior” were a little complex for his two year-old vocabulary, Alex did some mean bouncing in his car seat every time he’d hear that melody.
Anyhoo.
When I found out a few months ago that there was going to be a follow-up CD called “Hymned Again,” I was tickled to death. If you’ve read here for any length of time you know that THE MUSIC, I ADORE IT, and the old hymns are especially dear to my heart. Maybe it’s because I learned them when I was a child and the lyrics just get richer with time, or maybe it’s because I love singing the words that believers have been singing for generations, or maybe it’s because there’s so much rock-solid doctrine contained within four verses and a chorus. Regardless, I firmly believe that the old hymns are a treasure we need to intentionally share with our families.
So. If you’d like to win one of ten autographed (FANCY!) copies of “Hymned Again,” leave me a comment and tell me your favorite hymn. If you’re not so familiar with hymns, then just tell me your favorite song (in other words: no church-y background required to win).
And if you’d like a little hint of the musical goodness on this CD, you can watch the clip below.
This giveaway will be open until tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 central time, at which point I’ll close the comments and Mr. Random Integer Generator will select our ten winners.
Have fun, y’all!
This giveaway is now closed.

My favorite right now is actually the one on the video–”My Savior’s Love”…I heard it on KLove radio one day about 3 weeks ago, on my way to the hospital where I was taking care of my dying Grandma. The song reminded me that Jesus does care about our griefs and sorrows–that is what he was thinking about as he died on the cross!
My grandma passed away last week so now this hymn is so near and dear to my heart.
I also love the Old Rugged Cross, In the Garden, and Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing (although I giggle everytime we sing about “Mine Ebenezer”. What is that anyway????)

Hymns…good for your bones. Well, I’m actually not sure of that, but I know that I probably consumed more hymns as a young girl than milk. My father was the minister of music, and hymns were a family staple. :)
My favorite? How Great Thou Art
Hands Down. Those words and that melody have been the background to so many key points in my life that it will forever speak to me in new and changing ways.
“And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in. That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin.
Then sings my soul, my Savior, God to Thee: How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior, God to Thee: How great Thou art! How. Great. Thou. Art!!” Amen.

My all time favorite hymn(s)(You can’t expect a good Conservative Baptist girl to choose only one, can you?) are: Amazing Grace, Great is Thy Faithfulness, The Old Rugged Cross and How Great Thou Art.
Well, there are at least five others that I love equally as well, but you did ask for only one.

I’d have to say “How Great Thou Art” but there are just so many. I always get excited when my church sings “At the Cross” but that’s mostly because in my family we sang “At the bar, at the bar where I smoked my first cigar…” We were a super holy bunch.

Runningamuck says:
Oooh! that’s a tough question since I am a fellow lover-o-hymns. I would have to say, “It is Well”. I’ve always loved it but as a youngster, I remember hearing Joni Erickson Tada (does that date me?) sing it on a tape and that forever stamped it on my soul. I was amazed, even at a youngish age, that a woman in Joni’s state could sing and mean the words of this hymn. And how much more should I be truly content with my life and how God has blessed me?! Yowzers.
I love me some hymns. =0)

Clemntine says:
To answer your question, “Oh, the Deep Deep Love of Jesus” is my current favorite hymn, but probably only because it’s the one our family is studying this month. Here’s a shock: my Favorite Hymn is subject to change on, oh, a monthly basis. As we look into the composer, the author of the lyrics (sometimes the same person, sometimes different, sometimes separated by HUNDREDS of years!), their personal circumstances and the historical times, I am continually amazed, awed, humbled and blessed by these incredible tools of the faith.
I’m enjoying my iTunes Hymned music as we speak. My kids (ages 3 to 17) dig jamming along to these great versions of timeless hymns. BONUS: it saves me from having to answer the age-old question “Where is My Hairbrush?”. Can we give the Lord a handclap?

Dori says:
Oh, love this and want this! :)
Favorite hymn is:
“The Love Of God”
The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell
It goes beyond the highest star
And reaches to the lowest hell
The guilty pair, bowed down with care
God gave His Son to win
His erring child He reconciled
And pardoned from his sin
Could we with ink the ocean fil
And were the skies of parchment made
Were every stalk on earth a quill
And every man a scribe by trade
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry
Nor could the scroll contain the whol
Though stretched from sky to sky
O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure
The saints’ and angels’ song.
Blessings,
Dori

Impossible–simply impossible–to choose a favorite. I was even tempted to run and get one of the many songbooks sitting on my bookshelf and thumb through it, but instead I’ll just name a few that hold special memories for me: I Come to the Garden Alone; Paradise Valley; Hallelujah Praise Jehovah; A Beautiful Life; Wonderful Grace of Jesus; Where No One Stands Alone; The Lord’s My Shepherd; The Great Redeemer . . . see, it’s impossible! I grew up on all these old hymns that in many settings have been set aside in favor of the new “worship” hymns (many of which I love as well–someone mentioned In Christ Alone and I think that is one of the most beautiful songs ever–but I agree with you that our children and our children’s children need to know the old hymns as well. Thanks for the giveaway!

Wounded and bleeding, for sinners pleading,
Blind and unheeding, dying for me!”
I can’t even type the words without tearing up.
There are others .. I recall singing “Amazing Grace” with a friend, watching the sunset,at 5000 feet in a hot air balloon, over the eastern slope of the Bavarian Alps perhaps 10 years ago.

My dad was a pastor and so I have sung every verse of every hymn there is about a 150 times excluding “Just as I am” which was 150x at a service depending on how many came forward during the altar call. My husband teases me that I will be his lifeline friend if ever he is on “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” and needs the words to a hymn.

Hey there! So glad you’re back!
My favorite these days is What a Friend We Have in Jesus. I sing it to my 9 month old almost everyday and last week I had the opportunity to sing it to my mama in the hospital.
Sadly it’s so true. What peace I often forfeit because I don’t always take it to Him in prayer.

I’d have to say “it is well”. At least for the moment. It’s the hymn I’ve been singing to myself lately in this crazy upside down world I’m living in. (Actually, I asked God to make me a sunflower. That doesn’t seem to be working for me, so I’m singing hymns instead.)

Wow, there are so many good ones and just reading the other comments is a bit like flipping through a hymnal of favorites.
As far as my favorite, I’d have to go with Amazing Grace. I love it more as I experience it more. But oh mercy, I can still hear my grandfather singing The Old Rugged Cross in my ear when I stood on the pew next to him at church as just a little girl. And then there is Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, There’s Just Something About that Name. That’s another one that just means more to me as time goes by.

Oh, how to pick one favorite….What a Friend we Have in Jesus…Leaning on the Everlasting Arms, He’s the Lily of the Valley, The bright and morning star(was my grandmother’s favorite), Victory in Jesus…Don’t know if anyone else said it Jesus Loves Me. All of the verses pack a punch. Thanks for this. I love the new praise songs, but the old hymns don’t need to be totally forgotten…they need to be taught to the young ones…they will loose something wonderful.
Thanks for doing this…oh, how I hope i get picked….if not I may have to go out and buy both cd’s…they sound too good to not have.
Blessings on your week Sophie..

Hey BooMama! I am a first time poster, long time lurker. I love your blog, it’s not just a joyful part of my day, it is like an essential, almost a sustenance… but, well, that’s a little creepy so we will just say I LOVE IT. While on your hiatus I was a very moody girl, I missed my daily Boo laugh or inspiration, just ask my boyfriend! Anyhoo… I have a lot of old hymns that move me, but one that comes to mind is The Old Rugged Cross, mostly because we sing it every year at Easter Sunrise Service and I sit there with my mom, grandma, aunts and friends thinking how wonderful it is to be surrounded by such strong, faithful women absorbing this love from our Father.

Although, I do agree with #2 with the Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone) suggestion, too.

I grew up in a little, white country church in the country. My Mama (great grandmother) and Granny sat on the pew behind me and my family. My Granny is now 92 and kickin’. MaMa’s favorite song was “Little Brown church in the Wildwood” the men sing the low part “oh, come, come, come..” and the women sing the higher part. I am tearing up just thinking about that little church, filled with the voices of people who loved me.

I’m Eastern Orthodox now so I don’t sing these hymns in church, but I spent a lot of time with Baptists growing up. In fact, I was just talking to someone about how I feel it’s important for my kids to learn the hymns as part of their American Christian heritage. I’d love to win this CD! :)

Debbie says:
Precious Lord, Take my Hand
Words and music by Thomas Dorsey
1932
Precious Lord, take my hand,
Lead me on, let me stand,
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night,
Lead me on to the light:
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
When my way grows drear,
Precious Lord, linger near,
When my life is almost gone,
Hear my cry, hear my call,
Hold my hand lest I fall:
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
When the darkness appears
And the night draws near,
And the day is past and gone,
At the river I stand,
Guide my feet, hold my hand:
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

Samantha says:
The first Sunday my Husband and I ventured back to church following the stillbirth of our first child (36 weeks) the preacher was starting an eight week study on death (I kid you not.) We held onto one another for dear life just to keep ourselves from racing for the door. Of course, as all good Southern Baptist churches do, the hymns matched the message and were all about Heaven. Eleven years later I cannot sing “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand” without tears streaming down my face. All of a sudden I had a “possesion” in Heaven to look forward to. It truly became a real place to me that day in church.

Oh, dear…there’s no way I can choose a favorite hymn, but one I like is “Before the Throne of God Above”:
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea.
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart.
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.
When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free.
For God the just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.
Behold Him there the risen Lamb,
My perfect spotless righteousness,
The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace,
One in Himself I cannot die.
My soul is purchased by His blood,
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ my Savior and my God!

My absolute favorite is “It Is Well With My Soul” for two reasons. First, the Church of Christ group at Texas A&M that meets on campus on Tuesday nights used to sing that song to close out their meeting every week, and it just blew me away every time (no, I’m not CoC, but I love me some harmony!). And second, I found out later the story of how the song was written, and oh my. You’re just not gonna find much stronger faith in God than that.
Song gives me goosebumps every time, between the memories and the story. LOVE it.

There are the easy ones: each of my boys has their “own hymn” that I sang them to sleep with when they were little (and even now, somtimes). My oldest knows every verse to “Amazing Grace” and my youngest wants to hear “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!” year round.
But my most favorite hymn is “It Is Well”. In my very darkest hours, I have sat on my bed weeping and singing “It is well, it is well, with my soul” to myself. For me it sums up my entire Christian walk, no matter what happens on this earth – it is well with my soul.

Hello,
Great give away! I love so many old hyms but I don’t know the names of them all.
Specifically I like How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace and Over in the Glory Land.
I’ve ofen thought I would like Over in the Glory Land sung at my funeral, something about thoughts of signing with the happy angel band does it for me. How could there NOT be signing in heaven? I imagine the most beautiful music ever created.
Take Care,
Trixie

I love the Old Rugged Cross. I can never make it through all of the verses without getting choked-up. Everytime I sing it I picture a sweet old man that would get up to do specials when I was a little girl at church and this was his favorite thing to sing, his voice would fill the church and it was just a glimps of what it will be like when we all get to heaven and sing at our Saviours feet!

Okay, let’s see if I can make this 2 for 2. My favorite is How Great Thou Art. Carrie Underwood has a version out that is powerful to say the least. I am listening to it right now. The last verse gives me chills everytime I hear it. “When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation, and lead me home what joy shall fill my heart. Then I shall bow with humble adoration, and there proclaim, My God HOW GREAT THOU ART!” If you are a believer and don’t get teary eyed when you hear those words, there is a problem:) Amy K.

I was just talking about the lost hymns that we don’t sing in church anymore. I want my kids to grow up knowing the words to the hymns and hearing the music to them. I have lots of favorites, but how about, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know. Fills my every longing. Keeps me singing as I go.” And you have to sing it at a good clip with the elderly lady playing the piano.

Jackie Sue says:
The Love of God is my favorite hymn…I’m almost positive that Mercy Me did my favorite version and reacquainted me with this amazing song.
“Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill
And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above,
Would drain the oceans dry,
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.”
Even as I type is I get the tears, they come. I also love “I’d Rather Have Jesus”. Billy Grahams right hand guy sang it at every crusade..I can’t remember his name right now. Thanks for making me think about this today…always good for me to reflect and let our Lord touch my heart with His goodness. I would love to win, but if I don’t I’m betting I’m going to get it for my dh’s birthday next month. I hadn’t heard of the first Hymned either, so maybe I will get him both! Have a great day. Oh, and ARE you coming to the siesta fiesta this weekend??? I was hoping so :)
