Hymned Again

in Jesus Music

While I recognize that the title of this post might lead you to believe that the choir pulled some sort of practical joke at church yesterday morning, that is not the case at all, my friends.

Please do allow me to explain, oh thank you.

About three years ago I gave the husband a CD called “Hymned” by Bart Millard, the lead singer of Mercy Me. And we were crazy about the CD the very first time we listened to it. I loved being able to play Bart’s CD-o-hymns in the car with my little fella – who, if memory serves, was around two years old at the time. And even though the words to “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior” were a little complex for his two year-old vocabulary, Alex did some mean bouncing in his car seat every time he’d hear that melody.

Anyhoo.

When I found out a few months ago that there was going to be a follow-up CD called “Hymned Again,” I was tickled to death. If you’ve read here for any length of time you know that THE MUSIC, I ADORE IT, and the old hymns are especially dear to my heart. Maybe it’s because I learned them when I was a child and the lyrics just get richer with time, or maybe it’s because I love singing the words that believers have been singing for generations, or maybe it’s because there’s so much rock-solid doctrine contained within four verses and a chorus. Regardless, I firmly believe that the old hymns are a treasure we need to intentionally share with our families.

So. If you’d like to win one of ten autographed (FANCY!) copies of “Hymned Again,” leave me a comment and tell me your favorite hymn. If you’re not so familiar with hymns, then just tell me your favorite song (in other words: no church-y background required to win).

And if you’d like a little hint of the musical goodness on this CD, you can watch the clip below.

This giveaway will be open until tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 central time, at which point I’ll close the comments and Mr. Random Integer Generator will select our ten winners.

Have fun, y’all!

I love “Come thou fount”. We had it in our wedding and I love all the contemporary versions as well!

Michelle August 18, 2008 at 2:39 pm

I am a hymn fanatic….love the history behind them, love to learn the bible verses they are based on, etc. When I lost my daughter three years ago, the words to “Blessed Assurance” crept into my ears when I would least expect it: “this is my story, this is my song, praising my Saviour all the day long!”

I love Amazing Grace and Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. And inexplicably, I also love Once To Every Man And Nation, which is weird and in a minor key.

Joni August 18, 2008 at 2:40 pm

I’ll Fly Away

(Which has also been sung by Jars of Clay, Andy Griffith, Johnny Cash,Kanye West,Crystal Gayle, Avalon, Randy Travis, and Alan Jackson)

Cabana Ma'am August 18, 2008 at 2:41 pm

I’m all about “How Great Thou Art”–I get chills singing that to our God! :)

Beverly August 18, 2008 at 2:42 pm

I also can’t pick just one:

Old Hymns – “Come Thou Fount” and “Oh for a Thousand Tongues to Sing”

New hymns – “Jesus, Draw Me ever Nearer” or “In Christ Alone”

Beth@TheNaturalMommy August 18, 2008 at 2:43 pm

My favorite hymn is the oh-so-well-loved “It is well with my soul”. When you combine those powerful words with the background behind the song, and then add in any less-than-perfect life circumstance, it’s just a Holy Moment.

I was raised in a Southern Baptist church from about the age of five. I am now 39 (how did that happen) and although our church doesn’t do many hymns anymore, when I do hear them I still know almost every word. I would probably have to say my favorite is “Redeemed (how I love to proclaim it)”.

Caroline August 18, 2008 at 2:43 pm

“It is Well” is my FAVORITE!

Claudia August 18, 2008 at 2:44 pm

I love hymns!! My favorite is On Eagles Wings; my husbands favorite is How Great thou Art.

scottie August 18, 2008 at 2:44 pm

It is well with my soul….and of course Amazing Grace.

Kristin August 18, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Hands down, “Great is Thy Faithfulness”. This was the hymn that I walked down the aisle to at my wedding.

A close second (3rd & 4th)…”O, Sacred Head”, “Like a River Glorious”, and “When Peace Like a River”.

Hope August 18, 2008 at 2:46 pm

LOVE THIS!!!

We sing hymns at our church, at home, in the car…

I love teaching our kids hymns as well. We’ve read two volumes of “Hymns for a Kids’ Heart” numerous times. They are fabulous!

My favorite hymn: Immanuel’s Land (or The Sands of Time are Sinking)

Cate August 18, 2008 at 2:47 pm

Sooo Many, blest be the tie that bind, blessed assurance, amazing grace. Hope I win…thanks for the opportunity.

Amber August 18, 2008 at 2:48 pm

I love the old hymns, so much so that I actually struggle with our music director’s choice to hardly ever include them in worship. But . . . that doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy them at home, right?

My all time favorite hymn(s)(You can’t expect a good Conservative Baptist girl to choose only one, can you?) are: Amazing Grace, Great is Thy Faithfulness, The Old Rugged Cross and How Great Thou Art.

Well, there are at least five others that I love equally as well, but you did ask for only one.

Lisa August 18, 2008 at 2:48 pm

I love Take My Life and Let it Be, especially because it talks about singing (since I”m an aspiring opera singer!) and It Is Well With My Soul because its so awesome and has great meaning about resting in the love and trust of God.

Muddy August 18, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Blessed Assurance

One of my favorites hands down. It might have to do with a good memory of my son and this song from when he was little.

Thanks for the giveaway!

Ivy Six-Pack August 18, 2008 at 2:49 pm

pick my favorite hymn…now that’s just about impossible! While we don’t sing hymns very often on Sun am, I love going to the granparents church and singing them. They remind me so much of great memories in my childhood.

So, narrowing it down, I’d have to say, “Be Thou My Vision”. GLAD did a great rendition of it too. Now I’m starting to sound old…hehe

Becky August 18, 2008 at 2:51 pm

My absolute favorite would have to be
‘beautiful Savior” aka “Fairest Lord Jesus.” I also thank you for the opportunity and the info. I have never heard of these CDs.

erin August 18, 2008 at 2:52 pm

What a great giveaway! My favorite hymn is definitely “Come Thou Fount.”

Amy Martin August 18, 2008 at 2:53 pm

It Is Well With my Soul

Pam August 18, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Holy, Holy, Holy is my fav. Also love Fairest Lord Jesus, A MIghty Fortress, and Great is Thy Faithfulness.

Leslie Brooke August 18, 2008 at 2:56 pm

I love “Be Thou My Vision”, especially the old Ginny Owens version – Beautiful!

Stephanie August 18, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Hey Boomama! ;) My favorite is Come Thou Fount, quickly followed by Be Thou My Vision, and Haven of Rest, and many others!

Tricia August 18, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Only one? Oh, boy.

The Old Rugged Cross? LOVE IT.

Be Thou My Vision is a close second.

Amy August 18, 2008 at 2:58 pm

I love Great is Thy Faithfulness! It was sung at my wedding and will probably be at my funeral one day too! :)

alyssa August 18, 2008 at 2:59 pm

I Stand Amazed (How Marvelous)

Staci August 18, 2008 at 2:59 pm

It’s a toss up between “How Great Thou Art” and “It Is Well With My Soul”. Although, “I Stand Amazed” is quickly becoming one of my favorites too. Aggghh. Too many good ones to choose just one!

Jules August 18, 2008 at 2:59 pm

“More Love to Thee, O Christ” written by Elizabeth Prentiss

She is also the author of Stepping Heavenward – one of my favorite challenging/encouraging books that I re-read every couple of years.

On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand
How Great Thou Art
Be Thou My Vision

Oops…you only asked for one! Impossible!

A&EMom August 18, 2008 at 3:00 pm

For The Beauty Of The Earth is the first that comes to mind, probably because I worked so hard to learn to play it!

Vanderbilt Wife August 18, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I LOVE hymn CDs! I think my favorite hymn is “Be Thou My Vision.”

abby August 18, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I love “Come Thou Fount!” And would love that cd!

Susan August 18, 2008 at 3:02 pm

I love hymns….but I guess my favorite is It is well with my soul.

Nicole August 18, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Ummm…I’m not sure. Maybe “The Old Rugged Cross”..?

stephanie August 18, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Grace Greater than all Our Sins is a huge favorite … as is My Jesus I Love Thee. :)

The Gang's All Here! August 18, 2008 at 3:03 pm

I sang Great Is Thy Faithfulness and How Great Thou Art to all my babies in place of traditional lullabies. Not as a statement or anything, those are just the songs that welled up when I was rockin’ and nursin’ in the middle of the long nights of babies. That and Power in the Blood.

Fellow Hymns Junkie here – love, love, love! Even had my son make me a special play list on my iPod for my collection of hymns cd’s.

Seaton August 18, 2008 at 3:03 pm

I’m gonna go with “How Deep the Father’s Love For Us”

Karen August 18, 2008 at 3:03 pm

It Is Well With My Soul, hands down. A cappella, with 4-pt harmony.

mz. b August 18, 2008 at 3:03 pm

Sooo hard to pick just one. . . Be Thou My Vision and Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus) are definitely at the top of the list.

MELANIED August 18, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Blessed Assurance, I Surrender All, Be Thou My Vision, It is Well With My Soul, How Great Thou Art, I Know That My Redeemer Lives…stop me now!!

Julie August 18, 2008 at 3:05 pm

One? My Jesus, I Love Thee. It’s so great we sang it at our wedding – or at least listened to the congregation sing it behind us while we soaked up the moment.

Angie August 18, 2008 at 3:06 pm

I love “Amazing Grace” :)

Julia August 18, 2008 at 3:06 pm

Hymn favorites…. thats hard for a church musician…

- How Great Thou Art
- Be Thou My Vision
- My Jesus, I love Thee

Those would be the top three for me… at least today:)

Carrie August 18, 2008 at 3:06 pm

Just As I Am and Amazing Grace!

Missy August 18, 2008 at 3:07 pm

Where to start???

The Old Rugged Cross immediately comes to mind, and Victory in Jesus, I Love to Tell the Story, Blessed Assurance, and so many others. Oh, I need me an old fashioned hymn sing now…

Jessica August 18, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Hmmm…just one favorite? Be Thou My Vision….Amazing Grace…How Great Thou Art….Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee…. There’s too many to list.

I listened to the clip too…love him!!!

Mari August 18, 2008 at 3:08 pm

I know I would love this. My favorites change all the time, but I love I’ll Fly away and Amazing Grace. Then there’s When Peace like a River and To God be the Glory. Thanks for doing this!

Chris August 18, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Victory In Jesus!

My Savior, forever.
He sought me
And bought me
With His redeeming blood
He loved me ‘ere I knew Him
And all my love
Is due Him
He plunged me
To victory
Beneath the cleansing flood!

Sorry, we tend to get carried away here at the Singer household…
