Apparently Dairy Is A Priority Of Mine

in Rambling

Today has gotten away from me, what with working this morning and then going to the little guy’s parent-teacher conference and then eating lunch and and then napping and then decorating a picture of a turkey with Skittles (don’t ask) and then perusing the Thanksgiving week grocery circulars and then calling my husband into the kitchen to announce the various stores’ prices on Land O’ Lakes butter because, you know, HE CARES.

(But Land O’ Lakes is TWO DOLLARS A POUND at Walmart this week.)

(And, as I’ve mentioned before, my mama has told me all my life that there is no substitute for Land O’ Lakes butter.)

(Which means that the low price makes me want to buy, oh, about fifty pounds of it.)

I have also done some in-depth analysis of cream cheese prices, and so far Walmart is the winner at $1.18 a block. Remember when it was 98 cents last year? Sweet, sweet memories.

And speaking of cream cheese, several people have emailed me to ask for the Captain Rodney’s Dip recipe, so I’m happy to direct you to the very best use of cream cheese that you ever did see. Or eat, as it were.

In conclusion comma I feel that I should tell you that Campbell’s cream of whatever soups are sixty cents a can at Walmart.

Somebody might need to perform a grocery circular intervention.

But it had better be quick – before I head to the store to load up on those sweet potatoes that are only twenty eight cents a pound.

See y’all tomorrow.

Hey Sophie,

Up here in Canada, we had Thanksgiving middle of October.

But I thought I’d weigh in and tell you that up here, even at Walmarts, butter is NEVER that cheap (it hovers at about $3.36 lb) so I was wondering if you could stock me up some and send it down. Or up. Or whichever way I am from you.

And you don’t even want to guess how much cream cheese is… okay, I can tell the suspense is killing you. Right now, on SALE at the Safeways cream cheese is 2 blocks for $5.00

It’s expensive to be Canadian.

I just need you to know that reading the recipe for Captain Rodney’s dip makes me want to make it and eat it.

The whole thing.

Right now.

With a spoon.

That is sick, Sophie. Sick. I’m not right in the head.

Just wondering…

Should I be worried that this post made me excited to go grocery shopping?

It is 10:30 at night here…

…but, Walmart is open 24/7…

Thanks.

And I just partook in some Fig Preserves Cake. HalleluYAH!

You should have seen me and Sydney in the store, when I found fig preserves! in Colorado! I literally whooped! And I did a little dance similar to Evan Almighty. :)

That cake will make you act crazy! and go to crazy lengths to make it and find the ingredients, too.

And HalleluYAH for butter, as well. Amen.

Would it make us best friends if I told you I grew up about two blocks from Land O’ Lakes headquarters?

I feel a symbiosis with you, Sophie.

Sophie, I did partake in the Land O’ Lakes at Wally World today. I’m loaded up with 4 lbs….just in case! I also bought cream cheese and it was 1.18 and I had coupons. Bought cream of chick and mushroom at .60 each and had coupons for that too. Sweet taters are .25 @ lb so I loaded up on those too…what Thanksgiving without a Sweet tater casserole. Also check out the Publix sale flier,….tons of BOGOs there and lots have coupons, now thats out of the ballpark big time. P. S. Tried the Jennie O Oven Ready turkey breast and it was delish. Just thought I’d get the family warmed up for next week.

Gotta love Wallyworld! Too bad we don’t have a super Walmart nearby. Is it sad I get really excited to shop at a SuperWalmart when we travel?

Just to clarify, you’re talking about PHILADELPHIA cream cheese right? That’s my favorite, and I saw it for that price at my Walmart this week too!

Butter, cream cheese, cream-of-chemical soup. What more could a girl ask for?

For the first time ever, I bought my cream cheese in bulk at Costco. Right now I have eight blocks of cream cheese in my refrigerator. We are having to cut back a lot for Christmas, so I figure, what would make a lean Christmas better? Lots of cream cheese recipes…which makes me think you should host a Christmas Cream Cheese Recipe Mr. Linky thingy (I can’t think of a clever name, but I bet you can.) It would help me use up my Cream Cheese :)

Except that I think Tillamook might be better than Land ‘o Lakes… except I bet you can’t get it there. Sad. ;)

Okay, I tried Kirkland brand butter from Costco and it is NOT the same as Land O’ Lakes! And, though Walmart is not my favorite place to shop (for some reason in my area it’s always a bit on the, well, not the cleanest/freshest place on earth), it is just plain the cheapest! So, as I head out to stock up… guess I better be headin’ to Walmart! :)

BooMama,

Girl…thank you so much for the Land O Lakes info….My mama also said there was nothing as good as Land O Lakes…no margarine for her babies. But it has been a dilemma for me lately since our local grocery has been charging $6 a pound! Wal-Mart…Here I come!

Sweet potatoes are 0.25/pound at WM? I’ve been boycotting WM, but I may have to break down just for the sweet potatoes!

You are truly putting me in the holiday spirit with all those bargains! I never, ever shop Walmart, but for the price of those sweet potatoes, it might be worth the trip.

I just bought 8 blocks of cream cheese for 85 cents each. But it’s not Philadelphia.

Sophie – Did you know that Publix takes all competitor’s coupons? Last week The B’ham news had a Bruno’s flyer with a coupon for 10% off your total purchase!! The coupon was worth $19.34! I was so excited that I called my husband on the way home from the store. I think the joy I’m finding in coupons and store flyers is a sign that I’m getting OLD!!

I know what you mean! I booted up the work PC this morning and the first thing I did was pull up the online flyers for the local grocery stores and all the major chain stores to compare price per lb on Turkey and the like!

So looking forward to the folks flying down to Georgia on Monday and having a real NEW ENGLAND Thanksgiving meal.

No offense “y’all,” but there will not be any homemade mac ‘n cheese, sweet potato souffle or jello molds of any kind this year.

Bless my heart; I’m in heaven!

Dear BooMaMaSophie – my first reaction to your posting title today was “no kidding?!” your deep and abiding affection for all things dairy – especially cheese categories are well documented and enjoyed by all. Yes the price of cream cheese is horrendous – especially the nationally known brand which I normally buy as Neufchatel to make my wonderful pumpkin cheesecake. perhaps this is a divine intervention in the expansion of my hindquarters???

Oh my word, I’m TOTALLy jealous about 28 cents a pound sweet potatoes! My kid LOVE those! I got cream cheese for 99 cents at Aldi a couple of weeks ago, and since I’m not picky about the BRAND of butter as long as it’s 100% REAL butter, I got store-brand (Meijer, which I’m fairly certain is not in your state) for $1.88 a pound last week. I bought 4 boxes. We like our butter around here.

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with your post. :) Sorry, but I was listening to some of my Christmas CD’s here in what WAS warm FL and I came across one that might interest you. I know you are a big fan of Christy Nockels. It is Gloria, A Christmas Collection. It is one of my favorites even though it is more whimsical than traditional. It has some beautiful songs. Anyway, I thought you’d like it if you don’t have it already.

From the Land of 10,000 lakes, where Land O’ Lakes is made, I understand your love for that butter. Minnesota nice doesn’t just apply to the people, ya know. : )

And I have to say, I have that post bookmarked for that cream cheese rotel dip. I made it for a scrap booking weekend and the girls LOVED IT!

BooMama,
Long time lurker, first time poster.

Congratulations on the low-low-prices but be careful – Walmart products are cheaper than elsewhere because sometimes the ingrediants are actually different. I know that Walmart got in big trouble a while back about Breyers Ice Cream – their Breyers had lower quality ingrediants than say the Breyers in the grocery store.

All that to say… I love these recipies.

OK, so let’s say that we want to make that dip RIGHT NOW, and we don’t have any Boucan Glaze because they don’t sell it here, and we don’t want to wait for it to come in the mail, and we couldn’t order it right now online even if we wanted to because we NEED TO EAT THIS DIP RIGHT NOW?! What would be a fairly decent substitute?

Last night, my husband (who has been doing the bulk of the grocery shopping lately) and I had our own parade through the grocery specials ad. HE thought it would be FUN for me to quiz him on the prices of various staples, and it turns out that he does know the price of butter, half and half, and milk. I guess his new chore (and my nagging; he used to come home with out-of-season fruit and no generics) has paid off.

Thanks for the sweet potato low price heads up, because this girl totally rocks a sweet potato casserole. I end up making about 10 to 15 of them between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

You know about cream cheese and jalapeno jelly, right? That’s it. Those are the ingredients. Just open your cream cheese, dump the block on a plate, and pour/spoon some jalapeno jelly over it. Then tear into it with some Ritz crackers. Or, if you are afflicted with manners, cut a hunk off with a spreader and put some on a plate. Then get after it with the Ritz. Mmmm MMmm…

I love butter, I love bargains, and I love this post – talk about news you can use!

This actually made me want to go shopping, which is a HUGE deal considering grocery stores (stores in general and other places where large amounts of people gather – excluding church, of course) make me itch. Itch to yell at ppl I don’t know… “Why would you stop in the middle of the aisle like that?!” “Are you seriously going to leave your cart right there?!” “Did you not realize you were in the check out line and should probably have your method of payment fished out already???!” “Honestly did you plan to put 30 items in your cart only to put 29 of them back?! I’m just wonderin’…” “Am I on candid camera? Am I being ‘punked?’” I’m willing to seek help for this “issue.” So, is there a support group out there for this kind of thing?

Seriously, thanks for the info. I enjoyed your post and who knows, I may actually go shopping!

And did you see that the real cream cheese was on sale too?? It was a holy experience going on in the dairy section – at least it was for me.
