My Horn Can Pierce The Sky

by BooMama on 11 December 2008

in TV Is My Friend

Well it wasn’t exactly an episode that was chock-full-o-Christmas cheer, what with Meredith’s alcohol ish-ahs, Dwight’s doll scalping business, the failed intervention, Phyllis’ manipulation of Angela, Michael trying to drop off Meredith at rehab, and then Phyllis spilling the Angela / Dwight beans.

So basically tonight’s episode was what The Office would be like every single week if Tennessee Williams were the head writer.

Except Dunder-Mifflin would be in Mississippi, Michael would wear white suits, and everyone in the office would sweat a whole lot and smoke.

Nonetheless, some moments:

- “This isn’t your grandmother’s Christmas party. Unless she’s from Morocco. In which case it’s very accurate.”

- “I’m not going to judge Phyllis for desecrating Christmas. There is one person who will, though, and Phyllis just stuffed him in a drawer.”

- “Really, Andy? It’s Christmas. And you’re singing about nudity and France.”

- “I call it an Orange Vodjuiceka.”

- “Fa la la la la, la la ka-ching.”

- Dwight putting out Meredith’s hair with the fire extinguisher, OH MY WORD I LOVE HIM.

- “They called me ‘Puke.’”

- “They called me ‘Ace.’”

- “They called me ‘Buzz.’”

- “Meredith, you lit your hair on fire today. What is going to happen when you come into work, and you’re dead?”

- “I need to find ways to push Meredith to the bottom. I think I can. I did it with Jan.”

- “RUDDDD-DUTT-DUTT-DUTT-DO, RUD-DUT-DUT-DO.”

So while there was plenty of sarcasm, there wasn’t so much of the funny.

And I like the funny.

What about y’all? What did you think?

“I would shove a wooden stick in her brain.”

I heart Dwight.

I think it’s funny that I now watch the Office through “what-will-boomama-say”-colored glasses.

I did think there was a lot of really quite sad in this episode. I felt so bad for Andy. And Meredith. And Toby. BUT…

I loved when Pam said to Jim, “It’s Christmas!” and he gamely said, “She totally knew it.” Cutesy, they are. That pretty much redeemed the episode for me. Oh, that, and Jim making a gift wrap desk for Dwight. Who comes up with this stuff?

You are just killing me over here. Our TV is not hooked up right now. We have been having our addiction somewhat appeased by watching HULU on Friday’s.

I want so badly to throw in my two cents…but don’t even have that to offer tonight. :O(

I LOVED the Office! The randomness of it is the best – especially when Michael threw the pen at Toby’s face. Love it!

i liked all of the moments you noted here, but i too thought it lacked the “funny” element.

my 4 yr old happened to still be up and i shouldn’t have let her watch it!

The Dwight stuff was fun. The bit about the most satisfying way to kill a zombie, and that his family believed in the “Five Finger Intervention: awareness, education, control, acceptance and punching”

Yeah, not a real big fan of last night’s episode. It had its funnier moments, and thats about all I can say. Some episodes I love, others not so much!

I was very disappointed in last night’s episode :(

I can’t believe you didn’t list Jim and Andy:
“Do you take requests?”
“Sure”
“Please stop.”

Last night’s was nto as good as last week, but my favorite line was probably “Did a man with a horn have sex with a royal horse?”

Dwight is awesome.

I watched with hubs last night. To say I don’t see the humor is an understatement. I watch this with him most Thursdays. He doesn’t watch CSI (insert city) with me though. I enjoy mystery, blood and gore and he likes bizarre British based humor (he’s 1/2 Scottish) about a very dysfunctional office. Of course, he works in an office and I don’t. Very different tastes we have, but we still work better than I could have imagined. Have a great weekend.

The question burning in my brain is, “Where was Ryan?”

Alas…poor Toby. He just can’t bet a break.

Oh my can I tell you that DH and I almost wet ourselves with Andy on that guitar thing (don’t know what it’s called, sorry!)
“There a place in France…” LOL
And Toby saying, “This one is better than the one I wanted…” about the freakish doll with a horn.
And Dwight saying, Did a king have sex with a unicorn? or something like that, I missed it bc I was laughing so hard.
And classic, “What happens when you wake up dead and come to work.”
Dwight, “I put a wooden stake in her brain.” without missing a beat.
The only thing missing was a “that’s what she said.”
We actually thought it was one of the funniest ones ever!
BOO to Phyllis… wow. NOW what’s she gonna use?

Wellllll…….. I liked the moments you listed, but that’s about it! What is happening with this show?

I LOVED it…the whole unPC of Toby’s reaction to the doll…oh my gosh. It was great, and the desk wrapped up…got us to laughing about th jello pranks of old.

We really enjoyed it–but we were needing to laugh, ya know?

Everybody covered all our funnies. I think we laughed the hardest at Angela’s response to Phyllis throwing out the unnecessary nativity pieces to keep with the theme. And then Angela’s quote is priceless.

Oh and the Christmas tree? That was funny to me, too.

Very sad, but it had its funny too. I’m mad at myself, though, because the one line I just KNEW you’d have on here today is not here… and I can’t remember it either. SO frustrating!

Falalalalalalakaching.

I loved all the little things and thought it was funny up till the intervention.

I decided to watch this show for the first time last night ’cause I was flipping through for something to watch (I’d already seen all the challenges on Food Network) and I said “That’s what Boomama likes”. I think I should have picked another night to start – it made me a little sad. But I can see all the hilarity that’s in the background, and truthfully I laughed out loud when he drug her kicking and screaming into the rehab center, mainly because I haven’t watched it enough to know if that lady really has alcohol issues. It does help reading your “review” the next day – I’m gonna watch it again. I wanted to slap that big lady, though, the one with the glasses. She plays her part well.

I enjoyed it. It was a bit strange, but it was funny. I loved it when Jim said, “You’ll need a permit for that” in response to Dwight’s controlled-burn theory.

Also loved Dwight’s contingency plan in case Meredith came to work dead.

Ooh – I got Husband to stick around and watch 30 Rock with me. I’ve watched it on and off, but last night was great. Loved it.

The comments make me wonder if anyone on here has actually been a fan of The Office all the way from season 1? Almost this whole season so far has been right back to the way it was in the beginning… inappropriate, hilarious, awkward and completely awesome.

Reply

Gabby December 12, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Oh, Toby. You make me feel such sadness for you.

I loved the hair net. Come on, it was so classic.

Other than that, and the fire extinguisher and the discussion of a ‘controlled burn’ and a permit, it was a little lacking.

Dwight, “Why do you look so shocked?”

Reply

Shauna December 12, 2008 at 12:57 pm

Too much awkwardness for my taste, though a few of the lines you already listed were funny.

The gift wrapped desk at the beginning brought me back to first couple seasons. They use to do stuff like that all the time in the opening like Dwight’s stuff in the vending machine. So clever! Boomama, I’d love to see you do a total best of!

Michael dragging Meredith into the rehab center.

Definitely snort-worthy.

I’d say you caught all the funniest parts. The opening with Dwight’s big “present” was pretty good too.

Hubby & I definitely agreed that this wasn’t one of our favorites! Definitely missing the funny. :)

Reply

Ooh- also I loved that Michael knew the theme song for “My Horn Can Pierce the Sky” and proceeded to sing it with hand motions. So funny. :)

Totally agree, not very funny. I wrote a review as well and gave it a 5/10 overall. It’s okay, though. There were some funny quotes, though.
Dwight makes every episode pretty funny, anyway; the whole princess ordeal was pretty clever.
It’s okay. Come 2009, I bet the writers will be back on track. Somewhat.
Merry Christmas! Have fun giving out finals! (Which I don’t entirely miss, since they continue through college. Yikes.) :)

I’m not a huge Office fan, although I will occasionally watch it to see if perhaps it’s funny on that particular week. This week… not that funny. Although Michael’s definition of an intervention: “An intervention…it’s a surprise party for people who have addictions, and you get in their face and you scream at them and make them feel really badly about themselves and then they stop.”

Ohhhhh, to be in the brain of the writers when they come up with these things!

Angie Garza December 14, 2008 at 8:48 am

Add: when Michael was reading through the intervention list of questions….

Oh God, Toby’s pathetic need to get that doll for his daughter… that killed me. That was one rough episode.

I thought it was funny. Good Office humor as usual.
The prank on Dwight with the desk at the beginning made it one of the best episodes. Hilarious.

Andy (my favourite character since “Take Chance On Me”) shocked me with the college story, but I can’t understand “do some body shots off myself”. Can somebody help me ? Regards from Poland
