In the midst of all the Shred-type unpleasantness in my neck of the woods, I thought I would take a few minutes to focus on some products that I’ve recently tried and loved. As an added bonus, these things do not cause my muscles to spasm uncontrollably, so basically, you know, SCORE.
And I apologize in advance for another post that’s numbered. But this is a busy week, which means that numbering is my friend.
I do hope you understand.
1. So a couple of weeks ago when I was catching up on “The Hills” (I wish I could take back the first part of this sentence, but I cannot because it is true. Please don’t judge me.), I kept seeing commercials for a certain type of mascara. And since I am forever on a quest for the best inexpensive mascara in the universe, I knew that I had to try the new mascara when it was time to restock the make-up bag.
Last week I bought the mascara, which is called Cover Girl Exact Eyelights. I adore it. The coverage is great, it doesn’t clump, and it stays on all day long. Plus, I think the fact that it’s tinted (to compliment your eye color) as opposed to a straight-on Joan Jett black (as far as I know, Joan Jett has never had a signature mascara color, but I’m trying to be descriptive, you understand) makes it great for spring and summer.
Don’t ask me why I feel that mascara should be less heavy in the spring and summer. I have no idea, honestly. It’s just a gut cosmetic-related feeling.
By the way and FYI: Exact Eyelights is on sale right now at The CVS.
2. Here’s another new product that I adore: L’Oreal Infallible lip gloss in Petal. I got it as part of a Buy One, Get One Free deal at The Walgreens, and it’s my new favorite thing in the world. It doesn’t cake or flake off, and it doesn’t taste weird, either (I have Definite Issues when lip products come anywhere close to having a flavor).
3. I am a girl who loves me some slippers. Sister gave me a pair of UGGs about four years ago, and I have worn them within an inch of their ever-livin’ life. But in the summertime, the UGGs are too warm for me, so I end up wearing flipflops around the house and treating them like make-believe house shoes. However, it’s just not the same. Flipflops don’t have any of the smushy goodness of the UGGs.
Well.
This past weekend my friend Melanie gave me a pair of these slippers, and OH SWEET MERCY AT THE SUMMERTIME COMFORT. You get the coziness of the UGG with the functionality of the flipflop. They are a kicky delight.
4. And speaking of the flipflop – I am currently on a quest for the perfect black flipflop. I prefer a wedge and/or platform, and I was a huge fan of the SODA black flipflop until the only place I could find them was on websites that look like they were created in MS-DOS back in 1992.
So do any of y’all have any flipflop suggestions? I definitely don’t want to spend a bunch of money, but you should probably know that I like a little height on my flipflop heel because I find that when I wear a two-inch (or more) flipflop heel to the pool I am often mistaken for Heidi Klum.
That last sentence is totally true except for the fact that I have never been mistaken for Heidi Klum in my whole life ever.
But anyway, a nice heel on my flipflop makes me feel a little sassier, and if I’m going to have to sit at a pool all day long with other mamas who are cute and, you know, FIT, then I’ll take my sassy where I can find it, thankyouverymuch. Because I’ll tell you right now that the poolside sassiness is not going to come from anywhere other than my feet.
Unless you count my mascara and my lip gloss. And maybe if I wear my new slippers.
The end.

you wrote about 3 of my favoritest things in the whole world: mascara (I’m still using the pink and green bottle…so glad to have a good recommendation of something else!), lipgloss (but i’m a sucker for flavor, love some Burt’s Bees), and flip flops.
poolside sassiness is nonnegotiable. if i won’t get fit, then i’ll just be sassy and hope nobody notices.
funny, funny, funny! thanks for the giggles!

Reef Butter Flip Flops. You can’t go wrong. The $42 might seem steep but you will wear them many summers. At least a couple. For sure one.
May 4th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Okay, I wondered about the mascara. Any mascara that says “tinted” makes me think of the icky blue stuff from the 80’s. Say it ain’t so, B-Mama. Say it ain’t so. It frightens me and makes me tremble just a little.
Secondly, the fuzzy flip flops scare me. I’m sorry. I guess that for some reason, folks have confused them with acceptable footwear OUTSIDE of the home and they are obviously not outdoor footwear. So, my head shakes with visions of them walking through the grocery aisles. But, as long as you promise them to be at home only, its all good.
Finally, it does not have a heel, but it is a darned FINE! flip flop. I admit that I’m only a new flip flop convert. These past few years I’ve developed quite a love for my Clark’s flip flops. Oh look, I’ve looked my post up just for you!
http://baileysleaf.blogspot.com/2009/04/lovin-on-clarks.html
They have no heel, but they have an arch and are just divine to wear. You don’t really need that ole heel anyhow, right? The “Shred” has shredded your legs anyhow, right?! :)
May 4th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Teva flip flops. They’re usually around $20 at Rack Room, sporting goods stores, and places like that. It’s worth it because they will last for years.
The Hills is my secret shame as well. We should start a support/confession group for people who can recognize an emotionally abusive relationship but can’t turn away from the reality show about it. Or something.
May 4th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Poolside in AL is a must! In Colorado, it’s a happenstance. Man, I do miss having a pool–even though the water was 95 degrees in East Texas by May and lasting through October.
I wish I loved mascara. I don’t. It’s because of contacts and some bad situations–like the cornbread dressing, you understand.
Are there any contact wearers out there with mascara that doesn’t bother your eyes?
And when I have some extra dollars, I am so gonna buy some Petal lip gloss!!
May 4th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
I don’t know if I have ever told you this before but, I have to tell you now.
I love you.
I love your humor, honesty and the joy you have for life. Oh, and how you love Jesus, too! Just had to share.
Carry on, now.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Just say yes to Reef flip flops! I love them. They are pricey for flip flops but do the girl math…they last more than one season…they have arch support…and they are amazingly comfortable….all of that equals a must have in my book!
May 4th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
loving the list. i saw that same commcerial and was curious about the mascara.. i may check it out now!
May 4th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
i don’t know what your shoe size is but i found multiple, wonderful pairs of flip-flops at, of all places, lane bryant last year. i actually had to go down a size from usual. but they are fancy, pretty, wedgie and stylish.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
I love me some flip flops too!
Take a look at these:

So cute!!
May 4th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
Please update when you find these sassy black flip-flops. I too am in need of the snazzy black wedge flip-flops. To wear to church. Because I’m classy like that.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Have you tried the fit flop? Oh. Leg work out and cute and wedgy.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
I love Volatile flip flops…a little pricey but oh so cute and really comfy. You won’t be able to stop at one pair!
May 4th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Okay. I just finished a marathon drooling session over at Crocs.com. They may have what you’re looking for. And get this. There is a sale in honor of mother’s day on a certain flip flop type looking shoe. And pssssst, recently I bought the 3 inch wedge from Crocs. And I haven’t fallen down. Not once. In fact, I look rather sassy.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
I’m visiting from Amber’s blog. (I’m her aunt.)
While I am not particularly a fan of “flip-flops” for myself, I do shop for shoes online occasionaly, and I saw that Target has a line of wedge or platform flip-flops at VERY reasonable prices. How’s $10 to $15 sound?
I do enjoy your blog, by the way.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Reef…you will love them. I have them in brown leather and black leather. (bought them at Dillard’s) Love them! They will last you for several years.
May 4th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
You forgot your mouth. I’m pretty sure there’d be a fair amount of poolside sassiness coming from your mouth. ;)
May 4th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
Okay, I’m embarassed to admit this after looking at everyone else’s suggestions of some Seriously Stylin’ flip-flops, but I got my simple, black, ever-so-subtly heeled flip-flops at the Wal-Mart(s).
$2.
And they make my feet look skinny.
And I’m a size NINE.
AT. LEAST.
$2.
Wal-Mart(s).
SASSY!
May 4th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
Volatile.
Here’s the link.
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7521578/c/3.html
You can buy them at The Pants Store in Leeds for a lot cheaper (like $39).
They have the squishiness of Teva flip flops, but a cute wedge heel.
I prefer these to ANY OTHER SHOE I OWN.
Thank me later.
May 4th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
You’ve got to look at the Pure Juice flip flops! (purejuice.com)
My neighbor has had hers for 20 (TWENTY) years and they still look great. My favorites are the “Megan” but you might like the higher “Bouncing Betty”. They’re cheap, too.
May 4th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
You keep at it, Sophie! I was inspired by you and Melanie to commit to The Shred for the month of May, so you and all your spasms are doing me good, too!
I am wearing flip-flop slippers much like those, too!
May 4th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
My vote on the sassy-flops:

Volatile is an Awesome brand. All different heights and I love the animal print styles. Very cute and comfy!
May 4th, 2009 at 11:40 pm
You can find some really cute flip flops at any of the stores that sell Candies. Here in our neck of the woods, that store is Kohl’s. I just got some sassy, cute pink ones that I’ll be wearing to a high school reunion next month.
May 4th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
I am dying at how funny you are. I really love, love, love visiting you, and when you talk about make up, well, it’s akin to the experience of eating food with bacon or cheeeeeese.
I don’t often comment, but don’t go changing, Sophie. Well, change your mascara and shoes, but you know what I mean.
Your un-shredded friend, Gretchen

Ok…I just WET MY PANTS and…I can barely see to type!! I was TOTALLY not expecting the Heidi Klum to come flying out and omg….I think I haven’t laughed this hard – ALONE- in sooooo long!!! Boy, I think I wont’ have any problem going to sleep now—-now that my eyes are going to be all PUFF-DADDY in the morning from crying/laughing!!
Oh, You people should be so JEALOUS that I have such a funny sister-in-law!!
Ohhhh mercy….You are the best!

There is nothing better than a L’Oreal buy one get one free at the drugstore. That ranks up there with onion rings, a clear sunny day, and your wonderful blog.
May 5th, 2009 at 12:56 am
Haha!! Thanks for entertaining me this evening! Now…I’m off to check out those summer slippers! Sounds right up my alley.
May 5th, 2009 at 1:59 am
have you tried yellow box sandals? they are fabulous, usually between $35 and $45. i’ve had the pair i’m wearing for 5 years and they are still going strong!
May 5th, 2009 at 4:51 am
I’m imagining those pink, fuzzy slippers at the pool! LOL!
Also, I agree that we should take “pool sassiness” however we can get it – I think mine will come like this: “Look how much looser this (maternity) tankini is on me this summer!”
May 5th, 2009 at 6:02 am
I love a little height on my flip flop, too. It just helps…=)
Enjoyed my visit this morning…
May 5th, 2009 at 6:48 am
Great post! I thought I had sunk to a new low a couple of weeks ago when I bought mascara at Costco–two tubes of Borghese mascara for $15. Woot! But, actually, it’s pretty good. I have to apply a few coats to my scraggly lashes, but I like it.
Sorry I can’t help you with the flip flop issue. I’m 5′9″, my oldest daughter is 6′1″, and my middle daughter is 5′10″, so we are looking for any shoe that can make us seem more petite than we really are. I don’t think they make such an animal.
May 5th, 2009 at 7:08 am
YellowBox flip flops!
May 5th, 2009 at 7:09 am
I love Yellow Box flip flops. They have one that has a wedge heel and the straps are braided black leather. I have them in black but they also come in brown. I got them at Belk. They were $20.
I’m gonna have to get me some of that mascara. (I watch the Hills too. Audrina needs to get a life!)
May 5th, 2009 at 7:10 am
I LOVE it! Thanks for the recommendations and the humor! I’ll have to try out the mascara & lip gloss. Sounds like my type of thing!
May 5th, 2009 at 7:22 am
I CANNOT believe you just referenced MS-DOS, and as a result, I shall laugh out loud at inopportune times the entire day.
Thank You.
May 5th, 2009 at 7:39 am
I’ve not read the gazillion posts in front of mine, but Walmart has some very cute wedge flip flops – $6.00 a pair!
May 5th, 2009 at 7:40 am
Someone else may have pointed out the Walmart thing – that was my point. My fingers moved a bit too fast to the submit button.
May 5th, 2009 at 7:53 am
I’m in the market for a new mascara myself. I bought the XXL and I like it ok, but it really bothers me that I am essentially applying my mascara 2x. (Once for the microfiber “extensions” and then once for the actual mascara…and then I often repeat the whole process for smokey eye makeup.)
As for shoes, I have found a new website I just adore and more often then not they have wide width shoes in my size (i.e. BIG & WIDE)– and for 75% off retail & a flat fee s/h! Try 6pm.com!
May 5th, 2009 at 8:08 am
Try Reef Butter flip flops. They are pricier, but you will wear the soles out. $36 at Piperlime. You can find them at Dillard’s as well.
May 5th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Hands down…”VOLATILE” wedges, they are cute, have tons of styles, and are the most comfy flip flops I have ever worn.
May 5th, 2009 at 8:10 am
1. I love that you put “The” in front of CVS. I do not, but somehow my two year old has decided that it belongs there. Except that she calls it “The BZS”. Close enough. I looked up what CVS stood for one time and was horribly disappointed with the bland, generic flavor of their name. I’m sure if it were The BZS it would be MUCH more interesting.
2. Try RocketDog flip Flops. They have some super cute ones with good height – both in classic black and some with some great bling. I get ‘em at Rack Room Shoes or at DSW.
May 5th, 2009 at 8:15 am
Ha ha ha. Great post!
Switch flops are the absolute best! They have a wedge and one with a heel as well, and (gasp) they have matching straps to coordinate your outfit better. Here’s the link:
http://www.switchflops.com/cart/home.php
They are comfortable too! I might not look good at the pool, but my feet sure do. :)
May 5th, 2009 at 8:31 am
Reefs are my favorite. If you’d like some a little less expensive, Target has some now with a bit of a heel. Plus, you can afford to buy more than one pair!
May 5th, 2009 at 8:31 am
Love those new pink fuzzy slippers! And as far as flip flops go, one word…Yellowbox! They are the best and they have so much bling you might go blind sitting by the pool from the glare. Or else temporary blind cute other mothers. They have so many styles and flat, heeled, wedge, etc. You can find them http://www.zappos.com or any specialty shop. Good luck!
May 5th, 2009 at 8:44 am
Marybeth Whalen has some CUTE black flip flops on this post. http://marybethwhalen.blogspot.com/2009/05/20-of-my-favorite-things.html
I mean CUTE!!
May 5th, 2009 at 8:48 am
I’ll give a shout out to the Reef sandals! Love them all.
These in black: http://www.reef.com/girls/productdetail/girls/footwear/sandals/RF-001738
These in nearly any color:
http://www.reef.com/girls/productdetail/girls/footwear/sandals/1541
I don’t do heels on my flip-flops, though. The “What Not To Wear” crew would say they make petite people look squatty to wear thick-soled sandals.
May 5th, 2009 at 8:55 am
First of all, YOU ARE SO FUNNY!! I literally LOL after reading.
I LURV yellow box flip flops. They are way cute and very comfy. They are not too expensive and they have several wedge options. Have fun finding the perfect black flip flop. Oh, and if you can catch a good shoe sale at Belk’s you can usually get YB around $20.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:04 am
Yellowbox are the best. Belk has them on sale on and off all summer for about 20 bucks.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:07 am
well i certainly don’t feel this should be categorized under rambling…for crying out loud, this is good stuff my dear!
i’m headed out to grab some of that petal stuff and the mascara too
hallelujah
& you are your sassiness at the pool- you work it girl, you work it!
