Kellogg’s Love Your Cereal – Post 12

There are lots of times each year when we make breakfast a really special occasion: first day of school, birthdays and anytime we have guests staying with us – just to name a few. But there is one day each year that is like no other as far as breakfast is concerned. In fact, breakfast on this particular day has become such a tradition for us that I start looking for new recipes – or start thinking about how to modify old recipes – months in advance.

Anybody want to guess when our big breakfast day is?

Yep. You probably figured it out. Christmas.

Oh my word I love Christmas breakfast so much that I may have to stand up and hop a little bit. Just gets me all excited. Makes me want to put on the Harry Connick, Jr. Christmas album and make homemade biscuits.

The big Christmas breakfast hasn’t always been a tradition in our family, but a few years ago, when I started to be the one who was primarily the one responsible for the big family meal, I figured out that it just made good sense. We wake up on Christmas morning, open presents, then eat a big breakfast around 9 – and that’s it until Christmas dinner around 5 in the afternoon. I always serve breakfast foods that I can (mostly) make ahead of time, and there is just nothing like the smell of homemade coffee cake and sizzling bacon on Christmas Day. It just screams “HOME” – and I hope it’s a tradition that we’ll continue for years to come.

So what about you? Do you and your family have any special breakfast days? Tell me about it in the comments, and you’ll be entered to win a $100 Visa gift card. This is our last week of Kellogg’s giveaways; thanks so much for your participation!

I don’t think we have special days of the year for special breakfasts. I guess I have never considered it. We do like to have a nice breakfast on Christmas. I love to make migas throughout the year. No matter the day, they are always special.

We have breakfast together on Saturday or Sunday – whichever day the teens don’t have to work early. It’s always something delicious and a little more special than daily breakfast – breakfast casserole and fruit or french toast.

We haven’t really started any traditions with special breakfast days. I think because breakfast has never been a favorite for us since we have always tended to be nightowls. I’m not saying that we don’t absolutely love breakfast food at morning-times, mind you.

I’d like to think my family had the best Christmas breakfast tradition when I was growing up. My grandmother would buy champagne and smoked salmon as a special treat. It was my job to toast bread triangles, spread on some cream cheese, a slice of salmon, diced onions, lemon juice and capers… and we would devour platefuls of it with champagne (which I was only privy to after turning about 14). It was always very exciting and my sister and I would open our stockings as we had breakfast. This is my first Christmas with my own little family and I plan on continuing the tradition!

We usually do family breakfasts on Saturdays when we are not in a rush to get out of the house. The kids like french toast or pancakes.

Heather S October 27, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Our ritual consists of me cooking breakfast every morning. Scrambled eggs, sometimes waffles, crepes, french toast, or oatmeal. Then I help the kiddos get ready! On holidays we always make a little something holiday related for breakfast, like Boo-Berry Muffins!

Our special breakfasts are birthday person choice of all meals and shaped pancakes or sweet rolls seem to be the favorite there. I get mine in bed usually made by kids, often with egg shells in my eggs but i eat it ALL! even though the day before is Halloween and generally am in a candy coma by morning…LOL!

Breakfast for Christmas it the best! After opening gifts we have heart shaped waffles (from a heart shaped maker) and the kids top with strawberries and then are allowed to mound up the redi whip sky high and toss on sprinkes before their “CHRISTMAS trees”melt. We also do baked omelets, breakfast meats, and sweet rolls..then graze on holiday candy trays I have made. It’s a SWeeeEt day and this tradition is still going strong for over 20 years and 6 kids later!

thanks so much!

I’d have to say that Sunday mornings are my favorite – usually we’re not rushed and it’s our time to focus on us. Which means I have time to really cook something. :)

There are just us two adults in my household. We do enjoy the occasional elaborate, special breakfast, but it’s something that either of us will make spontainiously when we have the time and the mood strikes.

Sara @Doodle741 October 29, 2010 at 10:26 pm

Our Christmas morning tradition is Sour Dough pancakes!! I *L-O-V-E* them! I have the starter, but I am horrible about making them for myself and my family – so Christmas Eve Mom preps the batter and then Christmas morning she makes them! YUMMO!!

Thanks for the chance!

Kathleen October 29, 2010 at 10:34 pm

Our special breakfasts are generally on the weekends when everyone is home. We all sit down and eat together. The weekdays are generally hectic so it is usually cereal or waffles.
