An Oreck Magnesium Giveaway

It’s no big secret that I’m a huge college sports fan. Basketball and football are my favorites, and a lifelong love for Mississippi State teams of both varieties has left me well-acquainted with all sorts of game-related stresses. In fact, if you asked me how, as an adult, I’m able to remain relatively calm in the midst of a stressful situation, I would refer you to a dozen different clips on YouTube that chronicle a shocking, come-from-behind win by the Bulldogs – or a devastating, last-minute loss.

The Bulldogs have taught me some ridiculously strong coping skills, y’all.

I can’t remember the exact date, but I think it was sometime back in the mid-90s when I realized that the perfect way to get through a tense basketball game was to turn down the volume of the game, plug in my vacuum cleaner and GO TO TOWN cleaning whatever rugs or carpets were in the reach of the vacuum’s power cord. Over the years it’s become my all-time favorite stress reducer when I’m just BESIDE MYSELF with game time nerves. And as an added bonus, the living room / kitchen / playroom / wherever I happen to be watching is oh-so-clean by the time the game is over. Win or lose.

A few weeks ago I got an email asking if I’d be interested in receiving a (free) new Oreck Magnesium vacuum cleaner to use and review, and it took me all of about 45 seconds to respond to the email with a hearty “YES, PLEASE.” My old vacuum was on the brink of collapse, and since my mama and my sister have always raved about their Orecks, I thought the new Magnesium model would make a lovely addition to our family.

And oh, was I ever right.

My husband assembled the Oreck Magnesium in all of two minutes, and I decided that the perfect time for its inaugural run in our house was during a Mississippi State basketball game the next afternoon. I was watching in the playroom since I could only get the game via ESPN3, which meant that the vacuum cleaner was going to be put to the test on hardwood floors as well as a lime green shag rug.

I don’t know why I felt it necessary to mention the color of the rug.

Apparently I like to overshare when it comes to the various flooring surfaces in our home.

By the middle of the first half I was vacuuming like there was no tomorrow, and there were several things about the Oreck that won me over right away and continue make me want to refer to it as “The Baby.”

1) I don’t have to stop and adjust the vacuum height when I move from a rug to the hardwood floors. The vacuum works equally well on both.

2) The Oreck is incredibly light, which means that I don’t have to wrestle with it when I’m trying to turn corners, vacuum couch cushions, etc. If I wanted to, I could lift it over my head with one hand. Which I don’t. BUT I TOTALLY COULD.

3) Much to my surprise, the Oreck is really powerful. I can pretty much control it with the tip of my finger, which is a whole new experience for me when vacuuming that shag rug.

4) Because it’s so small, the Oreck easily fits in between the bottom of my kitchen cabinets and the floor. I don’t have to sweep and then vacuum – I just vacuum. Love that.

And in addition to all that stuff, the Bulldogs beat Alabama on the Saturday when I first tried the vacuum. So I think it’s probably a given at this point that I AM A FAN OF THE ORECK.

Storage is a big plus with this vacuum cleaner, too. In the past I’ve stored our vacuum in the hall closet, but the Oreck Magnesium is so small that it fits in a little corner of our laundry room – without sticking out in the middle of the floor and without needing to be moved whenever I open our pantry cabinets.

See? Doesn’t that just make you sixteen kinds of happy?

In all seriousness, it’s so great to have the vacuum on the end of the house where we need and use it the most. It’s handy if I need to clean up crumbs at the breakfast room table or if I accidentally spill sugar all over the kitchen floor.

That last thing is an embarrassingly common occurrence, by the way.

The bottom line is that I’m absolutely thrilled to have the Oreck Magnesium, and I think you’ll love it, too. If you’ve ever lugged a vacuum up or down stairs, the Magnesium is going to be a dream come true for you. It’s lightweight, compact and powerful – which, in my opinion, is pretty much the best of all worlds as far as a vacuum is concerned.

If you’d like to enter for a chance to win an Oreck Magnesium of your very own, it’s oh-so-simple. Just visit Oreck.com, do a little reading, then come back here and leave a comment telling us one thing that you learned about the Magnesium.

If you’d like an additional entry, then just mention the giveaway on Twitter (making sure to tag @oreck) or Facebook, then come back here and leave a second comment with a link to your tweet or post.

I’ll leave this giveaway open until next Thursday, February 8th at noon central, at which point I’ll draw for a winner using random.org. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to my notification email. If the winner doesn’t respond to my email within 48 hours, I’ll draw for another winner.

Happy Oreck-ing, y’all!

The giveaway winner must be a resident of the U.S. 48 contiguous states.

Oreck Corporation provided the prize for the sweepstakes but is not the sponsor of the sweepstakes.

  1. I love that it uses a HEPA bag. We have terrible allergies, so that would definitely help. I need a new vacuum so bad!

  2. Amy in Italy says:

    7 year warranty!?!?!?! And tune-ups!!!

(Now, know that if I were to win, I would give it to Sister … to whom vacuuming is her “Happy Place”. Most of her biggest life issues have been solved while removing dog hair and what-not from her living room floor. It would be like a “trophy”!)

    Thanks BooMama!

  4. Love it goes under kitchen cabinets and it has a HEPA filter.

  5. I’m so excited about this giveaway! My grandmother had an Oreck, and she loved it. My mom inherited it and raves about how well it cleans her floors. My mom is in good health, so I’m YEARS away from it being passed to my generation – which is completely fine and the way if have it! (that sounds awful. I was just trying to reiterate why I hope I win.). Anyway, I love the fact that it lays virtually flat for easy cleaning under furniture. I have a 3-year old Jack Russell whose life mission is to bark at all animals on TV and shed 3.5 cups of fur every day. This “lay flat feature” will come in very handy when vacuuming his favorite hiding place – under my antique love seat. Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  6. Here’s a link to my tweet: https://mobile.twitter.com/donnajdowns/status/165015126578171904. Thanks again!!!

  7. Stephanie says:

I like that it lays flat to get under furniture. I really need that function.

  8. Elizabeth Holloway says:

Love the LED headlights… For safe vacuuming in the dark!

  9. Elizabeth says:

Direct suction makes Orecks — including the Magnesium — some of the lightest vacuums around!

  10. Love the Hepa filter as my family has allergies!

  11. Teresa Stout says:

I like the fact that it goes flat to get under the furniture and the HEPA bag.
Would love to own this product.

  12. Susan in indiana says:

I too, love a HEPA filter! We have dogs so that is a plus. I also love that it can be used on carpet as well as hardwoods. Thanks Boo Mama!!

  13. I love so many things about it! I love that it is only 7.7 pounds, but that it has full Oreck power. The design looks really funky too.

  14. I love that it only weighs 7.7 lbs!!!

  15. Debbie Rutledge says:

Orek Magnesiums cost $499.99 (but they include free shipping!)

  16. Kathy Bubb says:

It’s the lightest upright Oreck ever!!!

  17. I’m loving the 30ft. cord. That means I can get more done before needing to unplug and move to a new outlet.

  18. I have a very heavy vacuum that is a pain to take up and down stairs. Love that it is so light and that you can get 3 yearly tune-ups.

  19. My goodness. I learned that aside from winning your giveaway, this single college-girl, full-time-worker girl will never be able to afford such a gem. I was hoping to be surprised since I’ve been wanting to get a vacuum (currently borrowing the one from the apartment building laundry room).

  20. Love that you can/could lift it over your head with one hand. That’s a deal maker!

  21. The hepa filter had me at hello. I would so give my current yellow beast to my daughter and use this daily!

  22. the 7 year warranty is really nice as i seem to have a knack for wearing things out awful quick.

  23. I’d have to say the Hepa filter is a big plus for our family with allergies. Also, the long cord would save me so much time!

  24. Melissa H. says:

The fact that it is so light-weight and would spare my back is very appealing to me.

  25. Katherine says:

A 30 ft cord AND twin LED headlights? Sign. Me. UP. Our current vacuum was one of our first purchases as a newly married couple, OVER 20 YEARS AGO. It’s time.

  26. I really like how light it is. Also the Hepa filter and long cord are great.

  27. Lori Gail says:

I love that the Magnesium works well on bare surface floors, and that it can schooch under the kitchen cabinets! I’ve been struggling to find a good vacuum option since we tiled almost the entire house!

  28. Love the 30 ft. power cord and how lightweight it is.

  29. 2 speed settings? Never had a vacuum with speed settings before :)

    Fingers crossed!

  30. The HEPA filter is a huge deal for me – my kids have mild asthma and we all have allergies. And a dog :)

  31. LOVE ORECK! My husband got me one several years ago with rewards points and when it died, I got another one for CASH! : ) I love that this one goes almost flat to get under furniture and the cord has a snap feature, that is my only complaint about mine now, the cord will not stay put! Thanks Boo Mama, this is a great contest!

  32. I love that the frame isn’t plastic. I often break the frame of a vacuum before the motor goes.

  33. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that it lays down almost flat to get under furniture, etc. Moving things is my per peeve of vacuuming …

  34. Daphne Petrey says:

Only weighs 7.7 lbs…I think that means that a certain 6 year old might be able to Vroom Vroom around the house with it occasionally! I like that potential!

  35. I like that it weighs under 8lbs. and it has 3 annual tune-ups…don’t know exactly what that entails but it sounds great!

  36. Is it weird that I think the most exciting feature might be the 30-foot cord? My house is little and we have a sheddy dog, I have to vacuum three times a week and I think that, with a 30-foot cord, I could plug it into one place and get the whole house without having to re-plug.
    Wow, my life sounds exciting.

  37. I love that it is so light. I love that you don’t have to bend over and change the height settings. I love the speed settings! I NEED the ORECK!

  38. Oh, hands down, the 30 foot cord. Our current vacuum gives me fits, and having to unplug it and move it around the house (it’s quite heavy) just serves to remind me that I really should have ended our relationship years ago. My mom has an Oreck, and I actually sometimes vacuum for her when I go visit. It’s glorious! So, if I happen to win this, there probably will be tears of joy.

  39. The Magnesium has not one, but two, TWO, headlights. Yee-haw.

  40. I love the long cord and the light weight!

  41. I learned that the only way I’ll be owning an Oreck Magnesium is if I win yours … $500 for a vacuum cleaner is STEEP. But, I do love the 7 year warranty, the headlights :) and the 30 foot long cord.

  42. I could really use a new vacuum! With two dogs and a cat, mine gets a lot of use. The 30′ cord is awesome!

  43. It only weighs 7.7 lbs! That would have to be easier on steps than what I have currently. Heck, my stairs might actually get vacuumed on a regular basis – that would be something new.

  44. Aunt Granny says:

I have back problems and appreciate the lightweight feature the most–but the generous warranty is certainly something to consider, too. Seven years. Wow!

  45. It is so light weight! I get tired of lugging my vacumn around. Would love something lighter that does a great job!

  46. I have a lightweight (cheap) vacuum at the moment and I think it must be designed for dorm rooms because the cord is incredibly short! I do not live in a mansion by any means, but there are several rooms in my house where I have to unplug and replug to get to every part of the room! Crazy! So, the combo of lightweight, but well-made, with a 30-foot long cord? Very appealing to me in my non-mansion-but-bigger-than-a-dorm-room house! Thanks, Boo!

  47. Thanks for doing the giveaway! I have carpeted stairs, and I sweat like a pig lugging my current cleaner up and down them (now who’s oversharing?).

  48. Lindsey Dean says:

I’ve bought several vacuums since I’ve been married and all of them lose suction. Over and over again I have heard that Oreck is the best!! I should have chalked it up and spent the money up front. Then I wouldn’t be replacing mine every year or two! I love that it lies flat, has a long cord, is light weight and uses a hepa filter! Excited about this giveaway!

  49. The long cord, the lightness, AND a HEPA filter! Please, please.

  50. I found out:
    1) The link didn’t work for me.
    2) Didn’t know how to spell Oreck correctly when I tried to type the address in
    3) The sweeper is only 7.7 pounds. That is 3.4 pounds less than my first child.
    4) I would love to make this a member of my family too!

  51. Connie Heggie says:

Love that it is lightweight, lighted and will lay flat to vacuum under furniture! ! !

  52. The magnesium lays completely flat to be able to get under the beds & other furniture so that I don’t have to hurt my back moving that stuff so much!! Love it!

  53. I love that it adjusts so easily to different flooring. We have tile, hardwood, carpet, and area rugs in our house. It would be great to have a vacuum that doesn’t require dismantling to switch floors, unlike my current vacuum.

  54. Less than 8 lbs would make it so nice to use on the 2 sets of stairs we have! And I love that it has a HEPA filter in the bag, too!

  55. Tina Thunell says:

Lightest Oreck ever, 7.7 lbs! Would love to win. Thanks for the chance.

  56. Lisa~A Cottage To Me says:

We have 2 basset hounds and a cat. It’s shedding season in our home and my bissell just isn’t doing the job on all the hair around my home. I’ve always wanted to own a Oreck, but they just haven’t been in our budget. I like that it is lightweight as I have stairs with carpet and carpet in the upstairs hallway as well. I have hardwood floors with large area rugs that seem to attract all the dust and dander of 3 pets and just daily living. A HEPA filter would take care of a lot of that going back into the air we breath. I would be very grateful if I were chosen to win an Oreck! Thanks for entering me for this giveaway!

  57. I love that it’s so light & does well on all surfaces.

  58. tia bennett says:

I have the basic oreck and love it! Vacuuming is therapeutic for me too!

It has a hepa filter bag
It has a maintenance plan, which I love. They give you a loner while they work on your too!

  59. Brittany L says:

Such a great giveway!! I learned that the Oreck Magnesium has 2 speeds, high for carpet and low for hardwood floors!!

  60. I love that it has a 30 ft cord. Will be nice to be able to clean without having to unplug multiple times

  61. You know your link to Oreck is broken, right?
No matter–I covet this vacuum. I had a most beloved Oreck which I loaned to a needy friend..that was an error. It is no longer my Oreck and she is no longer my friend. (Semi-kidding. But it was an error–I miss that vacuum in a big way!)

  62. The Oreck is lightweight and doesn’t lose suction! I’ve always wanted an Oreck. Thanks for the chance to win!

  63. Great giveaway! I love an extended warranty. :)

  64. Mollyanne says:

I like that it will lay flat…that would definitely help with the tumbleweeds of dog hair that find their way under all my furniture.

  65. I love the long cord & light weight. Thanks

  66. I know I’m getting older when I’m excited about a vacuum. With it’s direct suction path, lightweight maneuverability, ability to lay flat under furniture, and a 7 year warranty—this is everything a vacuum should be! It Just makes sense!

  67. I would love this vacuum because:
    1. It is cobalt blue – my absolute favorite color.
    2. It has the HEPA thing-ee, and our dog sheds about 6 pounds of fur per day, so sweeping that up is a never ending job, and the dust that comes with it is icky.
    3. It can lay flat, so I could sweep under everything – beds!! And that would be fun.
    4. I can have the children vacuum the stairs because it is lightweight.
    5. Headlights! I can now vacuum in the dark, or chase the kids and dog with it…Party!!

  68. I can’t tell you anything I DON’T like about this vacuum. I love that it’s lightweight. I love its claim to move easily from carpet to hardwood. I love how sleek it is. It would only be cooler if it were lime green.

  69. HEPA bag and 30 foot cord are a plus- my hallway is 35 feet long!

  70. This is the vacuum for me! I love the HEPA bag. Whoever had the bright idea of the see-through dirt compartment that you empty directly into the trash (or actually, empty directly onto your trash can, floor, and walls) wasn’t familiar with the effects of air resistance, static, and my poor coordination. Such a disgusting mess! And, who actually wants to see exactly how unsanitary their home is? You might think you do, but believe me, you don’t. I am a bag girl through and through. I cannot wait to get my hands on one of these babies!

  71. I love that you don’t have to change the adjustment between carpet and hardwoods. When I bought my last vacuum I toyed with buying and Oreck, but ended up trying to “save money” — lesson learned!

  72. I love that it is so lightweight! I hate lugging mine upstairs because it’s so heavy! And folding flat to get under furniture! That’s great!! I need this :)

  73. Like the long cord and the light weight!

  74. Courtney Sloane says:

This thing sounds lovely. Apparently it “packs .. so much power it feels like it’s self-propelled on most surfaces” which is handy as I’m not a huge fan of the work that currently goes into my vacuuming.

  75. Sophie~Bug's Mom says:

I have a Dyson and love it’s suction and power… but it is mammoth in weight and nearly impossible to use for stairs or those areas that could use a quick hit with the vacuum. I love that the Oreck Magnesium is so lightweight… sure would make it easier! Thanks for the opportunity to enter to win!

  76. hmmm…. so much to love. The lightweightedness (new word), the long cord, the hepa filter. Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

  77. Diane Davis says:

Love the light weight of the Oreck! Great for taking upstairs! Thanks so much!

  78. Wendie Owen says:

There are so many reasons why I love this vacuum…first, I love Oreck…my inlaws have one and I love using it when I clean their house… The weight, the Hepa bag, and the easy maneuvaring are just some of the reasons why it looks like a great vacuum :) I would love to own a Oreck Magnesium .

  79. love the 30 ft cord….not sure about the bags though…I have a Dyson right now and LOVE that I don’t have to worry about keeping extra bags on hand all the time….but I also love the lights. Would love to win it and compare it to my current Dyson!

  80. Wendie Owen says:

    PS…shared on FB too :)

  81. Goes under kitchen cabinets, 30 foot cord, and Hardwood floors!

  82. I like that it goes from carpet to bare floors without changing the height. Also that it lays flat which will make it much easier to get the cat hair that always seem to gather into dust bunnies (dust kitties?) under my dining room table and chairs.

  83. I need a new vacuum soooooooo bad!

Upon learning more about this beautiful gem of a vacuum, I learned that it is only 7.7 pounds! Surely if I can carry my 28 pound toddler everywhere I could easily maneuver this baby!

    Oh, I hope I win!!

  84. Hey! There’s a lot of cool stuff about this vacuum cleaner! Like, the Magnesium frame is stronger than many types of steel, it weighs only 7.7 lbs. and it has a 30 ft. cord! And you can’t go wrong with a 7-year limited warranty with 3 annual tune-ups! I would love this!

  85. I love that it’s lightweight. I have an industrial vacuum now and it weighs a ton!

  86. Yes, I love the fact that it’s light; and that it practically lays down flat to get under a couch or bed. But honestly, that little snap cord holder might be the most wonderful feature I’ve ever seen. I want this vacuum. I need this vacuum. Please, oh please random drawing thingy…pick me!

  87. I love the suction factor. My current vacuum barely picks anything up and sometimes I think it deposits more dirt on the floor than it actually sucked up. My 2nd favorite feature is the size. I currently live in an apartment that has closets that must have been designed by men who didn’t own anything so why make the closet bigger? Nothing is classier than your vacuum sitting out in the middle of the room because you didn’t feel like fighting the other junk you have in the closet to fit it back in. When friends come over I like to pretend they just caught me in the middle of cleaning but in reality, it has sat there for a week.

  88. I LOVE that it helps with allergies! I need ALL the help I can get in that area of my life. Thanks for the giveaway!!!

  89. Large high perfomance wheels baby!!!! This is the cadilac of vacuums!!

  90. Sarah McDonnell says:

The thought of not having to walk hunched over for 3 minutes after I vacuum the stairs because I can’t stand up straight without ridiculous back pain makes me super excited. A lightweight vacuum is super appealing.

Also, having a vacuum that doesn’t emit as much dust as it collects is always a plus.

  91. Sarah McDonnell says:
  92. I learned that it lays flat to clean under furniture which is great. Also, the fact that there is a switch to go from carpet to hard surfaces is really appealing to me since I have such a combination of flooring types. Thank you for the opportunity!

  93. This timing is perfect because just last night I was vacuuming and thinking that my Dyson is on its last legs. I am intrigued by the Oreck Magnesium – especially how light it is because I have to lug it up and down stairs and by the fact that it lays virtually flat for easy cleaning under furniture.
P.S. Am I the only one who couldn’t get the links to work?

  94. Melissa OConnor says:

Love the filter and the fact that it is light weight! Thanks for the giveaway

  95. I live in a split level, so lugging the vacuum up and down those steps is a big deal. This sounds like just what I need!

  96. I was impressed that it weighs only 7.7 pounds. One of our vacuum cleaners feels like it weighs 94 pounds.

We have 2 vacuum cleaners because I, too, am a fan of the stress-relieving effects of vacuuming. Not to mention the fact that we have 3 labrador retrievers who lounge around the hose most of the day shedding. Anyhoo, one ofour vacuums is actually an Oreck, so I’m obviously a fan. I love that it flattens out so you can get under furniture, which is the reason I use it more often than the other one. Well, that and the fact that I prefer not giving myself a hernia getting the other one out of the linen closet.

    Happy Thursday, Sophie!

  97. 499.99 – worth every penny! My mom and sister has an Oreck and I want to be in their club! I often get angry while vacuuming…my cord is so short I have to unplug mid room to finish – with the 30 ft cord my anger issues will be resolved! Ha!

  98. I like that it has a light on it and isn’t heavy. I have several sets of stairs to haul the vaccum up and down.
