Miscellany (As Well As Whatnot)

Well, I have started re-painting the cabinets that I started re-painting last week. And I can’t help but feel that the second color is much more soothing and a lot less HEY! IS THIS WHERE MARDI GRAS HAPPENS? than the first. Hopefully I’ll finish covering up all the green on Monday, and I will definitely take some pictures when I do.

Not that I haven’t worn y’all slap out with all my cabinet drama already.

We’ve also replaced our dead refrigerator with a new one, and once the delivery guys installed it yesterday morning and carried off our old one, the three of us sat in the kitchen for a few minutes and stared at our new appliance friend.

It was tricky to find one that fit in the allotted space since our house was built in the 70s – a simpler time when things like French door refrigerators were non-existent – so when we finally ran across one that wouldn’t block the entrance to our dining room, we were all over it. It’s a lot taller than our other one, and isn’t this the most fascinating content you’ve ever read? A comparison of refrigerators?

Up next: toasters!

Anyway, here are a few things that I’ve been meaning to mention but haven’t because of an overall lack of organization as well as a good measure of forgetfulness. It’s a winning combo.

Where’s My Perry?

Everybody in our little family absolutely adores this game. I actually finished it last night, and I will probably play through all the levels all over again. I had no idea that the laws of physics could be so much fun.

The Action Bible: God’s Redemptive Story

I bought this Bible for our little guy after JMom recommended it to me. I figured that it might be something he would look at from time to time – or something that we’d use to supplement his regular Bible – but he picked it up the day it came in and read it like a novel over the course of a week. Totally captivated by it. If you have a kid who likes superheroes, I bet they’ll enjoy this Bible, too.

Cowbell Tales

If you’re a Mississippi State fan, you need to check out Cowbell Tales. It’s such a neat way to commemorate one of State’s most beloved traditions, and you can be a part of it by submitting pictures or stories for the upcoming book.

The Worst Case Scenario: Amazon

This book has been a big hit in our house. HUGE.

– Strawberry Cake from Joe’s Italian

If you live in the Birmingham area and have not yet tried the strawberry cake from Joe’s Italian in Alabaster, I have a question for you: WHY? It is beyond delicious. Well worth the drive. The entrees are great, too, but the strawberry cake – well, it is magical.

– Not Crafty. Again.

A is really into Batman and wanted a bat signal. I told him to bring me a flashlight, some paper, and some scissors. Then I tried to cut out a shape like what I saw on his Batman cape. It turned out more like a dove signal than a bat signal, but it works like a charm when you shine it on the ceiling. Unfortunately, Doveman isn’t really in high demand these days.

– Zaxby’s Ice

I consider myself a bit of an ice connoisseur, and in my opinion Zaxby’s ice is finest ice of our time. I know that’s blasphemy to Sonic loyalists, but the Zaxby’s ice, while similar in its pellet shape, is a bit bigger and chewier. Perfection. Anyway, did you know that you can buy bags of Zaxby’s ice for $1.99? YOU CAN. You can buy it through the drive-thru or in the restaurant (as I have done twice in the last three days). And then you can enjoy said ice in the comfort of your very own home. It’s certain to add an exciting new dynamic to your ice consumption.

Hope y’all have a great week!

What a fabulous post! DIY, shiny new appliances, testimonials for kid’s Bible, a P&F game I was unaware of, a summer delicacy, and all topped off by ICE!! I am convinced we were separated at birth–I am so finicky about ice, but so pleased when it is right! My amazing husband purchases 4-5 bags at a time for me. You did get a double portion of the humor genes, though–there is NOBODY who makes me laugh til I cry like you do! :-D

  2. Thank you so much for the ice-tip! I’m an extra-ice kind of gal, and have MANY OPINIONS. I will now head to Xaxby’s post haste!

  3. Oh Xaxby’s ice sounds lovely. Congratulations on your new fridge. I have a dream/fantasy where ours dies. I.HATE.IT. Side-by-side from 1995, and it leaks water all over the floor, but not enough to warrant a new one since the ice maker still works and it keeps stuff cold. Grrrrr. Perhaps there is a fridge virus, and I hope ours catches it! Keep up the painting.

  4. When I got my new fridge I just stood and stared at the loveliness. It was so new and clean and not a smudge of anything anywhere. Delightful!

I was telling my family about Joe’s this weekend. Oh my stinkin goodness, it is so good. And that strawberry cake is almost too good to be true!

  5. We also enjoy Where’s My Perry?

If it’s anything like its predecessor, Where’s My Water, they will regularly come up with new levels. It is a day of celebration in our house when that happens, and we all fight for turns on the iPad. If you don’t already own it, Where’s My Water would be a very good use of your App Store funds!

  6. Although I mentioned to you on the Twitter (yes, don’t you remember me??) that we like Sonic ice here in Chattown, I am willing to give Zaxby’s ice a try. Why, you say? Or maybe you didn’t. Here’s why:

The icemaker in my fridge has been broken for lo, two years or so. Rather than fix it, my ingenius hubby (insert sarcasm here) decided we would buy a bag of ice every week to fill the ice hopper. Sonic ice tends to “clump” up in the hopper and therefore, we have to remove said hopper and take a Psycho movie knife (as in big, huge butcher knife) and repeatedly stab the poor ice to break it up.

It sounds as if Zaxby’s might be an acceptable replacement!

  7. Oh my gosh – you have changed my life!! I have always said if I had money to throw away, I would have a Zaxby’s ice machine in my garage. This is almost as good and much cheeper!! My girls always forgo the drink with the kid’s meal for just a cup of ice!

  8. My husband brought the Action Bible into our home after visiting friends at David C. Cook a few months ago. I’ve found the exact thing to be true! Both my 8-year-old boy and my 10-year-old girl have been reading it for days. I love that.

And the Perry game? Off to find my iPhone right now.

  9. I want to see a picture of the new green AND the new frig, please. It’s a little sad, isn’t it, when grown women get excited over appliances. But, if you’re anything like me, I’ve only had 2 refrigerators in 32 yrs. of marriage. (Well, 3, if you count the pink Kelvinator frig we had in our very small mobile home when we first got married. Yes, it was PINK. That wasn’t so cool in 1980.)

I had to laugh when I saw A’s. Batman light. Your craftiness is so like mine :( My 30 yr. old son is a die-hard Batman fan. I buy him a Batman t-shirt every once in a while, when I can find them. AND, did you know that Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments have Batman ornaments? They have made one for years……..8-9 years, anyway, because I get them for said 30 year old. This year they have the “Caped Crusader” and “Catwoman”. I’m just sayin’………

  10. Well, that little tidbit of ice related information may have just changed my life.

    Thank you!

    1) My brother-in-law’s stepdad, a professional MSU fan, was buried yesterday. The preacher rang a cowbell at the graveside service. Beautifulness.
    2) When I first glanced at the photo of the Amazon survival guide, I first thought it referenced the website. Honestly, I find Amazon.com overwhelming at times and figure, perhaps, such a guide may exists.
    3) My pregnancy would have been so much more enjoyable if I had known about that ice.

  12. Hey Sophie, I’m going to have to come to Birmingham if only to eat a piece of the delicious looking cake. I think I blew my calorie count just looking at it. I love reading your blog. I feel like I have been Rip Van Winkling it for 3 years while working in vocational ministry. Now I’m launching my own and looking forward to jumping back in! Be blessed, and seriously! Look for me at Joe’s Italian in the near future eating a piece of that cake! :) Much love.

  13. Can I just confess your blog makes me smile (and laugh alot!!!!!). Can’t wait to make the trip to B’ham for .MOM and let me just add I will be bringing the girls to have the strawberry cake even if we have to get it go and eat it in our hotel room! Yipee!!!!!

We are also SO into Where’s My Perry right now. I love that it teaches the kids some physics, but is also fun for me… fun, and um… somewhat ADDICTING. lol. But I am STUCK on game 12 of part 4… I can see that I need to split the lava and make it explode to release the steam from below, but MAN, I just can’t get it right, and now I’m getting frustrated!!! Any advice anyone? haha (Betcha never thought this would turn into a gaming forum… lol) :)

  15. Courtney Sloane says:

When I saw your tweet about Zaxby’s ice the other day, I felt like we were truly kindred spirits.

  16. My 15 year-old daughter wants Joe’s Italian Strawberry Cake as her wedding cake one day. (It is THAT good!) I’ll be sure and invite you and yours to the festivities in five to ten years!

  17. After reading this post and the Where’s My Perry shout out, we took a fly at it. Oh. My. Word. Addicting indeed!!

Can’t wait to see the after pictures (although, admittedly, I did think the punchy apple green color was fun to look at. In someone else’s kitchen, of course.)

Off to look up that Bible for sweetboy – as he is A’s age, too and you are the 4th person to give it a recommendation.

  18. I’ve never had Joe’s strawberry cake…I’ve heard it’s better than Edgar’s strawberry cake, which is my all time favorite.

  19. That cake looks so good! And that bat signal is way better than anything I could make…

  20. Oh deeeeeeeeeear. I’ll work on forgiving you for posting the Joe’s Strawberry Loveliness and the Zax ice whilst here in the Queen City with only Christian Chicken. God is able.

  21. I’ve never heard of the game, Where’s My Perry. It looks like fun though! I will have to look for it- it seems like a great game for the kids.

  22. LOVE Zaxby’s ice. So glad you can buy it in the bag now. Thanks for the Perry rec, too. Downloading it now. For the kids, of course.

  23. Bringingupboys says:

Sounds like our two boys would get along marvelously! Zach (my 9 yr old) is totally addicted to Where’s My Perry? and as a big superhero fan he has had a blast reading The Action Bible: God’s Redemptive Story. Unlike your son however he has not read through it like a novel, but that would be a great idea! Hope you have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend (I’m a bit behind on your postings). See you over in Pinterest Land…my login on here is also my login on there AND on my Kitchen, Bath & Laundry pinboard I have some kitchen cabinet painting repins that are really helpful. I repinned thae a while back because we are also considering a kitchen redo this Fall!
