The Big Boo Cast, Episode 27

Well, Melanie and I decided to record this podcast on a Tuesday afternoon whim, and as always, we had no plan, no rhyme, no reason. We did, however, have some thoughts about Justin Timberlake, John Mayer’s new album (Ben Rector’s, too), the Ben Affleck-as-Batman brouhaha, why I liked Argo, college football, and Candy Crush.

It’s all very academic. SCHOLARLY, you might say.

And in the interest of providing you with a thorough podcast experience, here’s the Taylor Swift / JLo video that Melanie mentions, and here’s the Kristen Chenoweth video that I talk about.

Also, it may be my favorite ending to a podcast ever. Because sometimes unexpected moments are the very best ones.

You can click here to listen. Or here. Or, as always, you can subscribe on iTunes if you’re feeling particularly fancy.

  1. Hey Sophie!
I haven’t listened to the latest podcast yet, but I did just watch the Kristen Chenoweth video. Wow!! Thanks so much for sharing that. Also, thanks so much for sharing your stories in “A Little Salty…” Your paragraphs on how some form opinions about what others wore to funerals could NOT have been more accurate and were surely written about my family! Thanks for all of the smiling.

  2. Kathleen G says:

Heavens to Betsy, your conversations with Melanie sounds like my friend and l when we converse. Watched the videos and I have to say, the voice teacher should be on Broadway. Beautiful voice.

  3. Isn’t the Sarah Horn/Kristin Chenoweth video *lovely*?

Aside from Sarah’s glorious voice, I dearly love how GENEROUS Kristin Chenoweth is, in the way she reacts to Sarah (and in the video available of her singing with the girl she brought up the following night). You can also see the conductor turn around when Sarah starts singing and exchange glances with Chenoweth, and, at the end, members of the LA Philharmonic applauding in the background. There is another video available in which Chenoweth says, “Note to self: do not bring up someone better than me.” I loved KC before all of this, I think even more highly of her now.

p.s. Have you seen the YouTube video of Sarah Horn singing “The Girl in 14G” during her graduate recital? Girl has some SERIOUS chops.

  4. Speaking of football, Sept 14. Auburn, AL. Be there!

  5. LOVE the podcasts! I’m a subscriber and let me tell you-I listen to you guys in my car because music becomes just noise to me. And let’s be real here…I bust out in hysterical laughter and I just feel like I’m in the middle of the conversation when I’m listening to the podcasts. So–you guys are my new BFF’s. :)

  6. Will be listening to the podcast later today. Looking forward to a laughter-filled work day afternoon.

I will go ahead and add that I, too, enjoyed Argo (language notwithstanding). I normally do not care for documentaries, regardless of the subject, but I thought Argo was a good blend of Hollywood production and documentary.

I’m not sure I understand the Ben Affleck/Batman uprising. I think he’ll do fine. He looks the part and how much does Batman speak anyway?

  7. Wendy Irwin says:

Howling laughing about the discussion of “beach chips” vs. “fall chips”. I have no less than eight varieties of chips (maybe more) in my pantry at this very moment – my favorite food group. So glad to have kindred spirits in this chip obsession.

  8. I loved this. I listened to the whole thing last night–what in the world is the snorting animal at the end of the fight song?

  9. Bizzymom says:

I had already watched the Sarah Horn video several times before I saw that you mentioned it. There is a second video of the performance by Holly Chloe that says “Closer View” and it is! Kristin Chenoweth grew up in my hometown (a few years after me). She was incredibly gracious to Sarah Horn who is returning to the Hollywood Bowl Sept 8.

P.S. I loved your book and have been reading your blog since Alex was three or four years old!

  10. This has nothing to do with anything podcast related (although the podcast was as delightful as usual!), but a few weeks ago you posted about misunderstanding song lyrics. I just found this video and thought I’d pass it along incase you haven’t seen it- http://youtu.be/WOffciZ9Gdw

  11. Aaaaaaaaaannnd… there is NO WAY you should miss this!!! :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GYSVO2WFjk

  12. You realize you have now set expectations for frequent updates!
There is no way you can go back to the annual editions.
Can’t wait for the after game day wrap up ;-)
