Sunday Night Catch-Up

Well, it’s Oscar night, and since I haven’t really seen anything that’s up for an award (well, I saw Gravity, but I was underwhelmed), I’m going to watch the Red Carpet and feel really relieved that I’m here at the house wearing a t-shirt and yoga pants. I mean, those gowns are gorgeous and all, but I’d rather hang out in pajamas any day of the week. I can’t even imagine the how many pairs of Spanx have been called to duty tonight in the Greater Los Angeles Area, but I’d be willing to bet that it is significant. And also somewhat restricting.

Since I barely blogged last week, I turned to Instagram a little bit more than I usually do – and in case you missed it, I want to be sure to pass along what was most definitely one of the high points of my week. It came in the form of an email from Anthropologie, and I am here to tell you that reading it felt like freedom to me.

Honestly, I don’t know when my calves have been more thrilled.

And to be clear, I think that skinny jeans look darlin’ on other people. But someone in my Instagram comments said it so well when she remarked that she no longer has to feel pressured to make herself look like an ice cream cone.  I’d never thought about it that way before, but that is EXACTLY how I’ve felt whenever I’ve tried on the skinnies. And after clinging to the boot cut with everything in me for the last four years, I’m so relieved that I can embrace the wide-legged pants again. ALL HAIL THE TROUSER JEANS.

Oh! And speaking of wide-legged pants…I really do love these from Old Navy. I bought a couple of pairs last spring because I thought they’d be great for work, and I just ordered two more that got here yesterday. They are super-comfortable. I just have two suggestions, though: order a size smaller than you normally wear because STRETCH (at least that was my experience), and be really careful about putting them in the dryer because they’re linen and they’ll pill if you aren’t careful. They’re on sale, though, if you order by Tuesday (code MARCH), and personally I am a sucker for an Old Navy discount code if it’s at least 30% off. It’s the little things, you know.

Another thing that brought me great joy last week was watching The Tonight Show. Maybe it’s because it was such a big deal to get to stay up late and watch it when I was growing up, but something about having a host from my very own generation – the first Gen-X’er to take the reins – well, it made me feel kind of old but mostly oh-so-happy (plus, I have a husband who has watched Jimmy Fallon since his very first Late Night show, and we always talk about how his genuine enjoyment of people makes him so fun to watch). Anyway, this was my favorite Tonight Show moment last week, and while yes, I know that Melanie mentioned it on her blog, too, I figure that maybe there are four of you who might have missed her post and therefore need to see the delightfulness that is Paul Rudd.

In addition to all of that, this weekend ended up being the greatest joy of the whole week, really. We had big fun with some sweet friends who were in town, and it was so good to relax and laugh and drink coffee and laugh and talk and laugh. Did my heart a world of good.

Plus, you know, there’s this sweet girl, who was waiting for Alex with me when I took this picture. We are CUCKOO about her – to the point that we have to laugh at ourselves because it’s ridiculous how attached we are.

And for what it’s worth, here are my favorite red carpet dresses (for the most part, tonight sure was a big ole parade of neutrals, now wasn’t it?):

1. Charlize Theron

2. Sandra Bullock

3. Amy Adams

4. Lupita Nyong’o

5. Olivia Wilde

They all looked beautiful. But I bet they’d give anything for a good pair of yoga pants right about now. And I bet they could put the hurt on some cupcakes, too.

Hope y’all have a great Monday!

  1. No doubt put he hurt on some cupcakes! Ellen is passing out pizza now. Your puppy is precious!!!!! Big fan of a dog with so much love he/she has no idea they are a dog. Truly–it’s the only way to live.

  2. You know what else is wonderfully back in style? FLATS. I just read an article today (can’t find the link) talking about how all the Very Stylish People are rejecting stilettos and supposedly some famous designer at Fashion Week had all his models in tennis shoes. And the article pointed out that clunky flat sandals like Birks will be all the rage this summer. I *have* to wear comfortable shoes whether they’re cute or not, so it delights me to think of all those fancy people realizing that stilettos are not advisable.

  3. “All Hail the Trouser Pant”! I am with you girlfriend. I have HIPS. When you whittle the leg down to a tiny fraction of what is up above, you look…. a little odd! And that little girl of yours? Just adorable.

  4. OH, I am so happy you shared that little announcement. I have hips, too, and skinnies do not flatter a hippie girl. I refused to succumb to the skinnies.

She is such a sweet puppy.

  5. That puppy has stumbled onto a life of sweetness for sure. Nothing that does my heart more good than a stray that somehow managed to fall face first into the life of luxury and an abundance of love. It’s a win for everyone…..

  6. Jennifer S says:

All hail wide leg pants for sure! That dog is just adorable. Just absolutely adorable! I don’t know how you ever leave her to go to work. I would hide her in a large purse and take her everywhere!

  7. THANK YOU for the link to the trouser pants at ON. They look like exactly what I want and I have ordered 2 pair. I took your advice and ordered a size smaller than normal. I can’t wait to get them! Thanks again for hooking us up.

  8. Becky in 'Bama says:

Hazel has the wisest eyes in Puppy World…EVER.

  9. When I read the “underwhelmed” statement it reminded me of this: “have you ever seen George Clooney in anything…..anything where you forgot it was George Clooney ” me either
I think a good actress/actress makes you forget them and embraces the character.

  10. Agreed!❤those linen britches from ON. I had theml last spring and have gotten the new ones as well :)

  11. No wonder you have fallen in love with that puppy, she is ADORABLE. I agree with your list of favorites, with the exception of Charlize Theron. Loved everything about her dress, except for the funky pointy straps. I thought they were extremely weird, and distracting from her otherwise gorgeousness.

  12. I just squeeee! whenever I see your puppy! Love.

  13. How could you not be besotted with that face? She’s adorable.

  14. Yet more reasons that I love you! Jimmy Fallon and trouser pants!!!!!!!!!! Ordering now!

  15. Hazel is charming! Hope she’s not chewing up anything dear to you. What fun to have such an adorable welcome committee when you get home from school!
Sophie, will you share your favorite brand of yoga pants? I’m in the front seat on the struggle bus trying to find some that work well.

  16. This is going to be the most ridiculous comment ever, but do you think the ON linen trouser pant could be worn as maternity pants? I’m quite tall, and trying to find maternity pants that come in long/tall, with the under the belly band (the full panel hits approximately at my belly button and attempts to chop me in half), is really difficult to find.

  17. Jessica says:

Thank you SO MUCH for saying everything I’ve felt about skinny jeans for years! Yep, clinging to the boot cut as well and lamenting that the stores never seemed to carry anything in a wider leg. Love trouser jeans and pants. Love those ON linen pants as well and the real kicker is that I placed an order at ON last night to take advantage of the 30% off sale and these pants were not part of the order…I just didn’t stumble upon them :-( Anyway, bless you for speaking out against the skinnies.

  18. your dog is completely precious! i can see how yall would be so attached. loved paul rudd…jimmy fallon is my fave :) and, i would add julia roberts to your lsit…thought she was stunning! hope your book is going well. just finished antelope…LOVED it!

  19. Just love your little Hazel dog. such a cutie. beware of things like earphones and ipad covers that you handle and smell like you—-my dog has chewed up 2 sets of earphones(one Bose) and my ipad mini cover. smells like me I guess.
I thought Lupita looked lovely and glowing, but her dress reminded me of the olden days of negligees in movies.
