Perhaps These Crackers Will Be An Encouragement To You

I don’t want to speak too soon, but I think I have a new favorite cracker for spring.

I know. It’s a little sudden. It was only a month ago when I was raving about the Crunchmaster Multi-Grain Sea Salt crackers.

But like so many good things, these crackers came along seemingly out of nowhere. I wasn’t even looking for a new favorite cracker. I picked them up on a whim, really.

I was at the grocery store, reaching for my standard box of Triscuits (I typically prefer the cracked pepper and olive oil) when a new flavor caught my eye. The combination of ingredients sounded interesting, so I put the new flavor in my cart – along with the cracked pepper and olive oil because, well, TRISCUIT INSURANCE.

It was almost a week later when I tried them, and while I don’t want to overstate it, I think it’s safe to say that I will be a repeat customer as long as Nabisco continues to make them.

Here’s what I enjoy about them.

1. They’re very dense. They’re not as crumble-y as a regular Triscuit, so I really like the change in texture.

2. They’re a little sweet and a little salty. Apparently I am drawn to that combination like a moth to flame.

3. This year I gave up sweets for Lent, so when I first tasted the little bit of sweetness in this particular Triscuit, my first thought was, “OH, IT IS PRACTICALLY A COOKIE.” But it’s not really like a cookie. It’s just that sometimes a hint of sweetness is mighty welcome indeed.

(Especially if you’re trying to curb a white-hot craving for red velvet cheesecake.)

(And no, the sweet potato / sea salt Triscuits certainly can’t replace cheesecake.)

(But they’ll do in a moment of quiet desperation.)

And if you’ll indulge me, I have one more cracker to share.

When Melanie and I were in Chicago a few weeks ago, the Tyndale folks served these sea salt crackers.

They’re outstanding. Here’s what I like about them.

1. They’re super crunchy.

2. They’re excellent with a slice of parmesan cheese. Some crackers can’t handle parmesan because they fall apart as soon as you bite into the parmesan, but this one was up to the task.

3. They’re rectangular. This means they’re the perfect two-bite cracker. I find that larger square or round crackers can lead to awkward snacking in front of other people because there’s no graceful way to eat them (especially if they tend to crumble), so a dense rectangular cracker is a much nicer option.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find these crackers in Birmingham. I still have to check Whole Foods, though, so I’m holding on to hope.

So there you have it. My new favorite crackers.

And yes, I realize that I’ve done a significant amount of needless over-analysis on this subject.

Let’s just all smile and pretend this is perfectly normal.

Do you have an all-time favorite cracker? Please feel free to share with the group.

  1. My old eyes are having a hard time reading the brand name of the second cracker…could you provide it? Many thanks, if so. I will let you know if I find them! Also, I have to think, after your description of the new Triscuits, that a sliver of country ham might do well on them. I love sweet potato biscuits with country ham!

  2. Wheat Thins with a little slice of smoked gouda!!! GLORY!

  3. I’ve seen the crostini crackers actually in the deli section……near the cheese case. They are fabulous.

  4. Triscuit Brown Rice Sea Salt and Black Pepper Crackers with hummus and celery on the side is my favorite right now.

  5. Honestly, I’ve never met a cracker I didn’t like. Hmmm, not sure I should have typed that.

  6. I will be picking up the triscuits today! And the made in (my very own) NC crostini cracker sounds fantastic, but might be too luscious for my new “plan” that began yesterday, but I will look for them and check the label. I enjoyed your thorough review!

  7. I love a sea salt pita chip which I realize isn’t a cracker as much as the name implies, it is a chip. We tend to not do the cracker thing at our house. Unless it is the holidays and cheese ball season. But we treat them as such with hummus, cheese and my husband has even been known to add them to a turkey sandwich. I completely understand your analysis of crackers and I just posted the same level of intensity on my latest post about candy. http://chairsfromthecurb.blogspot.com/2014/04/i-want-candy.html

  8. I am not a Triscuits fan, but I am totally intrigued by these! They sound delicious.

Maybe contact Sandamiri directly and ask about where they sell locally. They may be able to ship some too!

  9. Nina Lynch says:

Wasabi & Soy sauce Triscuits are amazing!! But you have to love love love wasabi and soy sauce!! Those little gems are a delight!!

  10. I know this is old school, but my day is not complete food-wise without good ‘ole Ritz crackers! And my two Pomeranians and Yorkie are equally obsessed. No matter where they are in the house, asleep or just lounging, they come running when they hear the crackle of the wrapper! They line up in order – yes, trust me, they know! – and each takes their cracker and trot off to their favorite pillow to eat (of course, so then I get to clean doggie crumbs off my sofa!).

  11. Kristen says:

I love the tomato-basil wheat thins. My favorite way to eat them is by the pool with a nice cold drink!

  12. Are you sure those aren’t “Tris-quee” crackers? That commercial cracked me up and made me think of you! Fancy! And looks delish!

  13. Love all manner of Triscuits and recently tried BACON RITZ–very good!

  14. I just need to share that I love your commitment to crackers. It brings me such joy because I can totally relate. I have crackers every day at lunch. I have to have something crunchy with whatever I’m eating.

That being said, I am on a Triscuit kick right now. Original. I can’t quit them. I like the thin crisp as well but they fall apart. I’m also forever a fan of the cheez it.

  15. I am a huge fan of the plain ole Triscuit, probbly my favorite cracker. Although, a plain Ritz is also very versatile.

  16. Well, I guess this is about as boring as can be, but my all-time favorite cracker is good ol’ Premium saltines. Reduced-fat Triscuits come in second.

  17. Rosemary and Olive Oil Triscuits are my all-time fave! I love them with the Laughing Cow light spreadable swiss cheese that comes in little triangles in the round box…..delightful! They are also good with a slice of just plain old colby jack cheese. I can do the Cracked Pepper (my hubby’s go-to cracker), but they’re a little too “peppery” for me. Oh, and while I know they’re not technically a cracker, I do love a good Stacy’s Pita Chip!

  18. Rachael B says:

I love me a cracker! I’m not sure I can say I have one favorite… my top few picks have to be Triscuit, Wheat Thins, Ritz, Sociables, Chicken in a Biscuit, I could go on and on.

  19. Triscuits Tomato and sweet basil! Oh my. I eat a serving for my lunch on a regular basis with some cheese because they are so filling. And I have a hearty appetite (unfortunately)!

  20. Plain old regular Cheez-Its are my favorite. I also love Honey Maid graham crackers. It’s called a cracker, but it is really a cracker? Or a cookie? Either way, yum.

  21. Crystal says:

I love Wheat Thins. But I have to say that one of my favorite snack foods is a Triscuit with one jalapeno and a slice of cheese on it. You put them in the oven to melt the cheese. DIVINE.

  22. Hi! My son and I love the TownHouse flatbread crisps. I prefer sea salt and olive oil, and he loves the roasted garlic.

  23. Merri Jo says:

Sophie, here in Wheaton I’ve seen the crostini at Jewel in the deli cheese area, and also at World Market!

  24. The WASA rosemary flatbread crackers were my favorite, but I cannot find them anymore (except occasionally at Big Lots). I can get them at Kroger, but obviously I have to go to Jackson to shop there! I just bought the cracked pepper Triscuits (had a dollar off coupon) but havent tried them yet. I have another coupon, so the sweet potato ones are next on my list!

  25. It may have been last summer that you mentioned (and then got me hooked on!) the Jingos!! I since then have discovered a CheezIt Zings –which are basically the same thing. YUM! Can’t wait to try these new Triscuits. And can I just say that I LOVE that you can blog about crackers? So great.

  26. I appreciate your expertise on the flavored cracker. I thought of you instantly when I saw the Bacon Ritz crackers and wondered if you have tried and reviewed them. As an afternoon snack as a kid, I used to take plain Triscuits with a slice of mozzarella cheese and a pepperoni slice as a mini pizza and nuke in the microwave.

  27. Ok. Read this post yesterday morning, and while at the grocery store had to pull it up on my phone so I would make sure I bought the *right* type of Triscuit, since there were 2 with sweet potato (and I *love* sweet potatoes!).

Could not wait to get home and try them. I kept thinking about them all the way home, and kicked myself for having put the groceries in my trunk where I could not reach them. As soon as I got in the house, I opened that baby – and ended up throwing the box in the trash. Worst thing I’ve ever tasted in my life. :-( Sweet potatoes just don’t taste right in cracker form.

My favorite will remain Spicy Buffalo Wheat Thins. Bare naked, nothing on them.

  28. I love Whole Wheat Ritz and we have battles between Cheese Nips and Cheezits! I bought the sweet potato a sea salt Triscuits at Walmart yesterday on your recommendation…so different! Sweet and crunchy, very satisfying! My mom and my son didn’t like them, so more for me! Have you tried the Chili Cheese Wheat Thins?

  29. Stumbled upon the Sandamiri crackers while at HomeGoods last night! $2.99 a bag – grabbed two flavors- black olive & rosemary. They were both great! Black olive sounded weird – but was tasty! Even my 23 month old loved ’em! I was afraid the rosemary would be overwhelming as rosemary can occasionally be – but it was just the right amount to give you that fresh herb flavor & deep buttery notes of rosemary! Thanks for the tip- I’ve got a new favorite cracker for cheese! Paired them with a extra sharp cheddar & the Cabot Alpine Blend Italian Hard Cheese (which I’d highly recommend!!!!)
