The Big Boo Cast, Episode 59

We had to record this podcast in two installments, but by diggity we got ‘er done. We spent the first installment marveling over Melanie’s fancy new microphone, digging into my significant obsession with Hamilton, and then discussing the recent baseball match-up between Mississippi State and Texas A&M.

It’s fair to say that the Aggies enjoyed some baseball dominance in Starkville.

In the second installment we talk about Hazel and Mabel, our summer Birkenstocks, my new favorite lipstick, and Melanie’s dream curling iron.

So basically this is all the hard-hitting news you’ve come to expect from us.

I also accidentally deleted a phrase around the 4:50 mark, but I didn’t catch it until I had finished editing the whole thing, so AS-IS, people. This one is coming to you AS-IS.

I think I can sum up this podcast nicely by telling you that we start off with a discussion about grackles and then move into a discussion about breakfast tacos. As you do.

We also talk about cooking, the Downton Abbey series finale, what’s in style this spring, and how some part of our personalities rebels against rigid organizational systems.

There is nary a mention of mascara, our hair, or Amy Grant.

We will try to do better next time.

First of all, I need to tell you that I mention in the podcast that there’s going to be new theme music, but I didn’t use the new theme music because I couldn’t make it be anything other than SCREAMING LOUD and I wanted to make it fade out a little bit but ultimately lacked the will and/or determination and/or technical expertise. I did, however, add it to the very end of the podcast (IT’S VERY LOUD), so be sure to let us know what you think. We’re a little tired of our evening newscast music. Just trying to switch things up a bit.

Second of all, I recognize that we’re a little rusty in this podcast because it’s been a while, but that didn’t really do anything at all to diminish our enjoyment of the process.

Third of all, Melanie’s had to bid farewell to her 2007 Logitech microphone about 45 minutes into the podcast. RIP, old microphone. RIP.

– Here’s the recipe Melanie mentions:

Melanie’s Chicken & Wild Rice

1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 soup can milk
1 box Uncle Ben’s long grain wild rice
1 pack chicken breasts, (or legs or thighs)

Preheat oven to 350. Blend soup and milk with rice and rice seasoning packet. Pour into baking dish. Arrange chicken on top. Cover with foil and bake 1 hour. Uncover. Bake 15 more minutes.

(Note from Mel: I usually double this recipe. I’ve also found adding a packet of Lipton Golden Onion soup mix to the rice mixture is a crowd pleaser.)

Well, welcome to our Christmas hodgepodge.

In this episode Melanie and I talk about Christmas preparations, Christmas menus, the A&M quarterback situation, my favorite way to cook steaks, Mel’s upcoming trip to the AT&T store, a couple of apps that I’m enjoying, writing software, and our favorite Christmas songs.

We also talk briefly about the rumor that Courteney Cox and Matthew Perry are ALLEGEDLY dating in real life.

This could change everything, y’all.

I’m not doing any links this time because we don’t really talk about any products or websites or anything like that. Remember, the word for the day was “hodgepodge;” this episode really is a little bit of everything and a whole lot of nothing. However, it’s over an hour of nothing, so hopefully that counts for something.

See what I did there?

And many thanks to Travis for being such a great sport. His “In the First Light” is my FAVORITE Christmas song this year.

Hope y’all enjoy this episode – and Merry Christmas, everybody!

Earlier this week Melanie and I tried to record a podcast, and I don’t really think it’s hyperbole when I say it was the most boring 40 minutes in the history of podcasting. In the history of ALL PODCASTS EVER.

So today, we tried to rebound, and things were considerably more upbeat. We talk about our current and very fun stage of raising preteens (seriously – this is my favorite – THE BEST), a favorite sandwich we’ve rediscovered, an exciting and new-to-me cooking show, how our love of pajamas keeps us from taking fancy trips, the joy and wonder that COLLEGE FOOTBALL, IT IS ALMOST HERE, and a whole bunch of other stuff I can’t remember.

Oh. Windows. We talk a lot about windows. Not the Microsoft kind. The ones in our houses.

Also, I feel like I need to warn you that I accidentally hit a button on the back of my microphone before we started recording, and I sound a little quieter than normal because of that. You can still hear me fine. But if you notice a difference between Melanie’s volume and mine, that’s why. I didn’t realize what I’d done until I was editing the podcast, so I’ve now returned my microphone to its original setting, and I have also decided that even though the sound isn’t optimal, WE WILL ALL SURVIVE.

Well, if your idea of a good time is hearing Melanie and me talk about how we can barely muster the will to leave the house this summer, then this podcast is for you!

And really, we are leaving the house. We would just not choose to leave the house, necessarily, if we weren’t responsible for the care and socialization of some very active pre-teens.

We also talk about how we met (I thought most people who read our blogs knew that story already, but I’m always happy to share it), a video thing that we’re doing with Christy Nockels and my resulting hair insecurities, the holy re-do of Melanie getting to spend time with Christy and her hair, and the very exciting possibility of Melanie making a guest appearance on John Tesh’s radio show.

I also have some disappointing Sheerlume news. I just want to prepare you for that in advance.

We also discuss our favorite summer candles and answer a few more questions from y’all, too.
